Walker: you’re no Biggie, Small

Hennessy Sports Press Release

Walker: you’re no Biggie, Small

Image

Former two-weight Southern Area champion and European title challenger David Walker has dismissed the affections of the outspoken Deptford light middleweight Anthony Small.

Small recently claimed on an Internet site that not only would he like to fight ‘Kid Dynamite,’ but that his team had actually attempted, unsuccessfully, to make the fight.

“I have never heard anything more ridiculous in my life,” said Walker. “Firstly, to my mind, Small needs to get out of nappies before he starts talking about fighting me; he is a seven fight novice.

“I am a proven Championship contender who has won two titles and challenged for the European. The only fight I have lost in two and half years was against Roman Karmazin, who is now the IBF light middleweight champion.

“Secondly, his team – whoever they are - have not spoken to anyone at Hennessy Sports about making this contest.

“And if they did, the reason the fight would be turned down wouldn’t be because we are worried about anything Small brings to the table. It would be because we don’t feel he has done anything to earn the fight.

“In my opinion, the guy is a poor mans Spencer Fearon! I believe he is all flash and no substance. He even struggled to get out of the South East Divisional’s in the ABA’s. I am a former ABA champion and top England International.

“Small asks what could I do to beat him, well how about knock him out? He’s nowhere near being ready to live with a peak me. If you ask me he’s a circus act.”

Walker added: “I don’t feel Small is anywhere near even being the best light middleweight prospect in London, let alone England.

“I reckon the best young talent we have at that weight is easily my Hennessy Sports teammate Darren Barker.

“Darren is a real stand out talent but he keeps quiet about it. He also has real pedigree. He is a Commonwealth games gold medallist and multi nations gold medallist. That to me indicates he is in a different league to Small.

“From their one common opponent, Andrei Sherel, you may think the pair were similarly matched because they both beat him in 3.

“But Barker’s was a dominant win; he blew him away. In my opinion Small was being given all he could handle and Sherel was unlucky to get stopped.”

That would be a very good fight actually, not sure how much Walker has left.

Perhaps a little early in Small's career, but possibly a calculated risk.

Would be a good fight, but I think David would be made for Small.

Alot would depend on the number of rounds, I think if its a 10/12 rounder perhaps Walker might get to Small, 6/8 rounder though Walker will probably get outboxed.

The way Walker is fighting at the moment I wouldn't put it past him getting stopped by Small. Not that I think Small is going to amount to anything but I can see Walker just coming plodding in and taking a beating

Havins seen Anthony spar in the gym and having sparred with him, he definitely has the stamina to do the rounds. I would expect him to bust David up and stop him.

I think Small may prove a nuisance for two or three rounds before Walker's experience and high volume attacks forces Small to cave in. Small's strenth to stand up to punishment has improved but Walker's right when he says Small struggled to get past the South East Divs. ABAs. Small mostly had his hands full so the pedigree is lacking.

Walker's not finished yet and I think he has more championship fights left in him.

Small is a class act with LOADS of talent.

Walker is an accident waiting to happen.

Small would embarrass and humiliate Walker.

Small thinks he's Mayweather already. He'd probably beat Walker who is garbage, but he'll get beat himself soon.

To be fair it was Sam Webb who halted his last two ABA attempts, Webb (IMO) is a better fighter than Walker even though he never won the ABAs.
Also, the last Webb-Small fight could've gone either way really. :box:

Small carried Howard Clarke in their last fight. I reckon Howard only agreed to take the fight if Small promised not to KO him.

Small oozes talent and is simply much better than Walker

Good article. The difference between Small and other guys like Witter and HAmed who are flashy is that Anthony is respectful and personable out of the ring.

He is a fighter and repects fighters, however limited...

i saw this small guy against sherel, and thought he had big talent beneath the clowning, certainly enough to beat walker who wouldn't be much of a challenge, and a good fight for Small to take now, considering walker is proven area level and nothing more.

How far does everyone think he can go? Also, Is he a big hitter?

I'm on my own then!!! :D

Firstly to call Walker garbage is just plain disrepectful to the guys ability and his contribution to boxing...amateur and pro.

Yes, the last Small v Webb contest could have gone either way (I had Small winning actually), but unlike Walker, Small didn't make a huge impression in the ABA's. Some good results, but so did Walker and a lot more besides.

As for the great conspiracy theory against Small, I've seen some excellent stand-up, text book boxers who would be the perfect protocol for the ABA officials also receive rough justice on occasions. It would seem almost everyone could chip in with that line to cover their own shortcomings as an excuse.

Also, I'm admirer of Sam Webb too, but don't see how he could be considered a better amateur than Walker. Their successes and achievements are two very different stories. However, now that Webb's back with Bromley and Downham, here's hoping he can finally crack the ABA's. :TU:

Directly comparing Walker's and Small's win's over Howard Clarke could be misleading. David and Anthony's styles are chalk and cheese. Small's is based around hitting and not being hit and he does this well. Walker's is often about swamping his opponents with continued pressure and raining in punches, so the route to victory is going to be more hazzardous for him. He did get countered by Clarke and dropped, but the one point margin seemed way off to me. Walker had Clarke in trouble seconds before getting decked and out worked Howard clearly in every round from my seat.

As promising as Small is, he's light years away from Roman Karmazin for instance and I really think it will take a lot more than what Small can offer to beat Walker right now. David's not a world beater, and I'm sure he would admit that, but he is a contender on the British light middle circuit, Small should get there too but I don't think he's ready just yet.

Yeah, it's getting a little boring now.

I think Small would he better served keeping his reflexes tuned-up and go for a more realistic target in Darren Barker.

Maybe Gilbert Eastman could vacate the Southern Area light middle weight title (if he still holds it) and let Small and Barker box each other for it sometime soon.

Barker would start a very heavy favourite in my view.
