Jerry Quarry Vs The Pres

Post by BoxBuzz »

I'm pullin Jerry Quarry out of Moth Balls (in his prime) to see how he does against our favorite Jail Bird. So does he get the Job Done? Or does I.I. give him another L in his column? Big size difference here.

Jerry has wins over Patterson, Spencer, Foster, Lyle, Shavers. Some of those guys were not small.

He came up short against Ali, Frazier Norton and Chuvalo.

Is that enough of a resume to send the Commander in Chief into the loser's corner for the first time?

Ike is the "lost champ" because he outworked Tua and because he flattened amn guy half his size in Byrd. Tua, being way overweight and lazy with his hands should not be that hard to outwork and Chris Byrd is a tubby middleweight. There is much made of Tua's hook but I'd favor that of Quarry- throwing like jhe did in the first Frazier fight, Tua may go 10 but it would be a wide decision, maybe Tua gets tko'd before that

Jerry Quarry is one of the most underrated heavyweights of all time, but come on, the guy's fighting weight was frequently under 200 lbs. In fact I believe 209 was the heaviest he ever weighed for a fight. He never lost a fight to an opponent he outweighed though. Why not ask how Quarry would do against any cruiserweight or heavyweight under 210 in history. He would have absolutely terrorized the cruiserweight division, but beat Ike Ibeabuchi ? I seriously doubt a 200 lb Joe Louis would have.

I think Quarry wins the decision. Ike's image making fights were a win over Byrd and the punchathon with Tua. I didn't see the Tua fight, but it is curious that heavyweights could throw and land that many punches without a knockout. I would infer that neither fighter threw punches with full leverage or someone would have gone down with the punching power involved. Against Byrd, Byrd "won" rounds by dancing away from Ike until he got caught. Ike winged and missed a lot in that fight, but he never had to worry about being tagged and pressed constantly.

Quarry is another matter. He would be on Ike like white on rice and Ike's big punching would be nullified. He would have to worry about the return fire and Quarry used combinations, not just a winging punch. Quarry was much better inside, and would grind Ike up in there regardless of a 30 pound weight disadvantage. Getting hit solidly in the body by a 190-200lb fighter hurts, regardless if you're Joe Louis's size or Primo Carnera's. So I like Quarry by decision.
