Post by BrocktonBlockbuster49 »

i never saw the fight. anyone want to fill me in with detial on what happened.
did tillis have a chance at winning the fight?

from what i have read and heard, tillis managed to land some blows but failed to follow up and fought too defensively and lost a close unanimous decision. angelo dundee was pissed at quick tillis after cause he fought to cautiuos.

I saw the fight a long time ago and what I vaguely remember is Weaver pressing more of the action while Tillis in typical fashion only occasionally demonstrates his superior boxing skills. I believe it was Ferdie Pacheco who once said of Tillis "He's like an artist in the ring, he does something brilliant, then steps back to admire his work".

I have the fight on tape. Tillis was winning this one easy in the first couple of rounds until Tillis went into his laidback coasting stage and Weaver got the middlerounds only because Tillis did nothing and at least Weaver was punching. Tillis was called a fornicating bum by Dundee in the corner and Dundee slapped Tillis's face to try and get him to fight. Tillis landed a massive right on Weaver's jaw and Weaver was on shaky legs but Tillis just went on his bycycle and failed to follow up his attack.

In the final rounds Tillis was simply just running away with the crowd booing and Weaver won a boring UD. Tillis said he lost because he was allergic to something which caused him to run out of gas i.e Weaver, Thomas, Page and Holyfield fights. By the time he fought Tyson Tillis found out he was allergic to eggs and thats why he gave a good performance against Tyson, but by that time Tillis was past his best.

How did the WBA, if Cooney was the #1 contender, pass him up for Tillis?
