this is a fight of the year with 2 unkown guys. i never saw the fight
was it that good???? what happneed in the fight.
from what i know, it was for the IBF super flyweight title. Quiroga was the champion and he beat akeem in a decision and akeem collapes after the match cause of a blood clot and never fought again and sadly died 3 years laster in 1994 at only 26. who knows he was just coming up, he could have been a future champion if not more at super flyweight.

Great fight. Akeem was quite tall for 115lbs and a good puncher- that was essentially ghis defense, keeping the shorter fighters at a distance of his choosing and pummelling them. Quiroga was a very busy fighter, pretty good at getting close where he would throw lots of combinations. They both fought their fight, and they were using 6oz gloves. Quiroga took lots of punches coming in but he got there frequently, and when he did he was effective, scoring well to head and body. I believe it was a split decision and Kid Akeem collapsed right after it was announced, and Quiroga had plastic surgery to repair his face. Rules were changed to mandate 8oz gloves .
This is one of those fights which make you guilty for watching it. It is a great fight, nonstop action and the power of the punches these two swap is truly awesome for such small men (perhaps this also has something to do with the 6oz 'punchers gloves' being used). By the end the fight is brutal with both badly hurt and bloodied at the end and Akeem collapsed after the decision was announced. Its very sad what happened to Akeem who had been groomed for stardom he was a great boxer who could punch and slug it out as well. The difference between him and Quiroga was that the champion was just that little bit stronger and more mature. But this fight finished Quiroga too as a fighter really.
Akeem sadly got into drugs after this fight (though I have heard that he was already involved by the time of this fight and actually had a wrap of something on him during the fight) and was deported I beleive. I think he died while training for a 'comeback' in his native country.
