top 25 boxers/stylists of all time tough topic

Post by BrocktonBlockbuster49 »

my top 25 - dont expect the big punchers to be in here, and remember this is top 25 who pocess the best boxing skills, not who are the best fighters.

1. Sugar Ray Robinson
2. Sugar Ray Leonard
3. Muhammad Ali
4. Willie Pep
5. Henry Armstrong
6. Freddie Miller
7. Jack Johnson
8. Benny Leonard
9. Ezzard Charles
10. Ted Kid Lewis
11. Barney Ross
12. Billy Conn
13. Tommy Loughran
14. Roy Jones jr
15. Joe Gans
16. Salvador Sanchez
17. Maxie Rosenbloom
18. Kid Gavilan
19. Ike Williams
20. Pernell Whitaker
21. Larry Holmes
22. Gene Tunney
23. Jersey Joe Walcott
24. Lou Ambers
25. Floyd Mayweather- i might get critized for this, but in my honest opinion he is so gifted and so smart and defintely the best boxer currently and he reminds me a lot of ray leonard, and he has the potential to not only be one of the best p4p of our era but an all time great.

- i just want to let u know i thought this up for over an hour so i didnt just put down people, so people u might think deserved to be on this list i probably did think about. it was hard for me to leave some people out as i felt they could have been on my list, but i had to leave some of the great boxers off. this was the hardest list to put together by far.

give me ur opinion or perhaps ur top 20.

BB

Is this about elegant boxers with great defences who are well schooled in the art of boxing?

Armstrong was a true great but I'm not sure I'd put him in this category of fighter (in terms of style).

I'd have Gans and Whittaker higher and I would definitely find room for Benitez and Pedroza. What about Corbett? He had a big imapct on boxing with his refined style. You could make an argument to include him.

yes this is, i felt armstrong was a very good boxer as well as a knockout artist. he wasnt a big puncher but had a lot of power because he had such quick hands and delievered sharp accurate quick punches. his great boxing skills led to many of his knockouts.

i almost put benitez and corbett in. i thought it over a lot. they both probaby deseve to be in. benitez was already a master boxer at 17 lol. and corbet invented the art of boxing.

I think Pep is considered to be the ultimate boxer by many. I've only seen clips of him in action so i'm basing this on what I've read.

I've seen bits of Ted Kid Lewis and I thought he was more of a swarmer type, but again I really haven't seen enought to be a fair judge.

i really like this idea of considering types. great thread :TU:

Benvenuti was also a stylish boxer. he is often overlooked today because he ran into Monzon. Griffith was also an excellent boxer with a stout defence.

Three guys who should be in there are Ismal Luguna, Ken Buchannan, Jose Napoles... also Benitez... who was prob superior to Leonard in pure boxing skill.
Armstrong was a slugger rather than a 'boxer'.

That's what I thought silkov, "stylists" are supposed to be 1st class boxers... and there are many known and un-known.

Rosenbloom, was not pretty and correct me if I'm wrong, was Ambers or Ted kid Lewis (???).

One of the great stylist from more modern times would have to be Hector Camacho... and Brockton, I'll agree with you on Mayweather he IS a stylist, but I think some of the older stylist mentioned like Joe Gans or Ike Williams would have demanded more out of him!

Pure Boxers

Post by Chuck1052 »

Sorry.....a fighter like Muhammad Ali was NOT great pure
boxer. Yes, he had great athletic ability and an effective,
unorthodox style, but a trainer would not teach Ali's
boxing style to anyone else. Another thing to remember
is that Ali started to get tagged often when he was
losing his reflexes. Only his tremendous durability
and heart pulled him through after that happened.

To tell you the truth, I would also omit Sugar Ray
Robinson and Sugar Ray Leonard from the list
of greatest pure boxers. Both relied too much
on athletic ability rather than great technical
skill.

If you want to see films of fighters with pure
boxing skills, find footage of Willie Pep, Miguel
Canto, Alberto Davila, Wilfredo Benitez, and
Pernell Whitaker in action. Understand....I
am NOT saying that someone like Davila was
a great fighter, but he had a beautiful boxing
style.

I said the same thing about RJJ in another post.

They were great fighters with awful techniques that could only work for them.

Larry Holmes at "stylist"? I'm not just dogging Holmes. I felt he was a really good fighter in his time and definitely a HOF; but not in the category of these guys.
Good list, though I would have included W. Benitez and ranked him and Whitaker higher than that.
