Honestly...a De la Hoya question...
Honestly guys... I mean De la Hoya is a good fighter and all that but.. will he be as popular as Julio Cesar Chavez for all the Mexicans and Mexicans Americans? Will he be remembered as a national hero just like Chavez did? it was evident that Chavez conquered the hearts of the whole nation of mexico and America too. Honestly.. i think that Chavez had a bigger heart and was much braver than Oscar. Chavez never ducked anyone, thats a true champ right there. all heart, dedication and all attitude..

As a Mexican, i'd say De La Hoya will be remember by American and Mexican American fans more than Julio Cesar Chavez. Not by Mexican fans though. As for Chavez not ducking anyone, I'd say that's true in a way but De La Hoya consistently fought better opposition. I don't think Chavez is the greates Mexican boxer but he'll always have a place in my heart as one of the best. In my own opinion, Chavez might have been the better of the two. However, De La Hoya is a great thing for boxing. He's promoting and he's bringing boxing back in a way with his fight cards. He's also helping Latino boxers get some TV time. So in my opinion De La Hoya will be remember more than Chavez. Because Chavez was a great fighter and all but De La Hoya is still around even though he's not fighting. De La Hoya will never be seen as great as Chavez in Mexico though, but in the U.S. he probably already has more popularity. And you gotta admit, love him or hate him, every PPV event he's been on has been entertaining. That's just my two cents. And I can't remember De La Hoya ducking anyone either.
DLH
And DLH returned that favor twice in the late 90's.ELA wrote:De La Hoya was 15 or 16 years old. The story was there was allot of reporters there and Chavez was there to work out and De La Hoya was got serious and Chavez put him in his place.
DLH
I was referring to the post wherein an ADULT Chavez had put a TEENAGE DLH in his place while sparring.
Well, after that said TEENAGER grew up, he returned that same favor, and then some.
As for your opinion of a "same-age" Chavez vs DLH and Chavez beating DLH, well, that's your opinion.

DLH was notorious for getting established boxers in the ring to spar and then ambushing them. GenARO Hernandez got it after a hand injury and expected just to get some work in, not reporters and DLH jumping on him. He did the same thing to Chavez; the pro is, first, going to go easy on the amateur, especially since its the start of a Cinco de Mayo celebration and there were supposedly lots of the Spanish language media there. But Oscar came out fast and got on Chavez, whop was suprised and basically covered up for a round and the writers got all excited until they began a second round and Chavez walked across the ring and clipped him, compelliung DLH to take a knee.
That was the story I was told by a guy I worked with who had a son that trained at the gym

As a Mexican/P.R/American i wont remember DLH as much as Chavez. Chavez had the style that all us Mexican, and Chicano fans love and admire. De La Hoya a great fighter in his own rite, just wasn't Warrior enough. He showed spurts of it, but not on the level as Chavez. Though I don't consider Chavez the greatest of all-time he is my all-time favorite fighter.
