Todays date a boxing legend was born 82 years ago, The Rock
Rocky Marciano's birthday is today sept 1. he would have been 82 if he were still alive.
i thought this might be a good time to pay a tribute to him,
so post ur thoughts on him as a fighter and a man, and share some stories that u have heard on him that other people might not know about.
i guess il share a story of him as a kid. this was when he first discovered his Suzie Q. he was 16 i believe.
so there was a minor league baseball team that plays all the time in brockton , and they had a ball boy names julie durham. he was a big strong kid. his job was to fetch the foul balls and make sre no ones steals it. so rocky and his friends Eugene slyvester and izzy gold. loved to hide in the woods and then grab the foul ball and take off before julie durham could catch them.
well one time a foul ball was hit and Eugene grabbed it, and before he knew it julie durham was coming right at him. Eugene dropped the ball and kicked it in the bushes.
Julie durham went "wheres the ball" and Eugene went "what ball"??
Julie durham said "u know what im talking about, give me the ball or i am gonna have to kick ur ass." well rocky and Izzy were standing right next to eugene. Rocky stepped up and said "if u want to fight him ur gonna have to get through me." then eugene said "no rocky i can take him, let me have it." Then rocky did what eugene slyvester inside had been praying he would do to save himself from a beating, rocky said "No Euey ill take him, this is my fight."
well Julie immedietely hit him with a sharp sucker jab to rockys nose and rocky fell down. then rocky got up with his nose bleeding(even then he had a susceptible nose to blood) and then Rocky tough as nails and doesnt care about getting hurt goes after julie durham and for the the next couple minutes the two trade blows with the bigger stronger julie durham getting the better of it . it appeared that rocky was about to lose the battle and get knocked out when out of nowhere rocky fired a roundhouse overhand right that landed right on julie durhams chin. and just in a matter of seconds, it went from durham beating on rocky to durham laying on the ground out cold from one right hand punch.
All the kids watching were schocked, Izzy said to rock " hey great job, but gee whered u get a punch like that man??"
rocky "i dont know it came out of nowhere. but hey that julie durham kids not such a bad kid after all, we should hang out with him sometime."
and rocky and julie durham became firends, with durham attending some of his fights. but on that hott summer day, Rocky showed his first sign of what was yet to come.
i always liked that story. anyone wanna share some rare stories that u cant find in books or articles???

i heard a story that when they were simulating a fight between ali and marciano...they had the two spar a hundred 1-minute rounds... mind u this was an old rocky and pretty young ali, and they both came to the conclusion only body shots, no head shots...well ali kept jabbing marciano to the head anyway, and knocking marciano's toupe (sp?) off...well ali did it one too many times, and the rock got mad...so he fired one of his vicious rights to the body of ali that put him down... after this, i heard that muhammad ali refused to do any more sparring unless he was payed a thousand dollars extra....
it's been a while since i heard this,,,so it may be tweaked a little..lol
p.s. hey blockbuster,,,rocky is my favorite fighter off all time too

Anybody read that article in Sport's Illustrated a long time ago on Marciano?I've never seen it but apparently it showed a bit of the Rock's seamier side, mainly his cheapness and sexual kinkiness.I don't care anything about that stuff, mentioning it only because I loved the response a boxing writer gave to the article, dismissing it by saying that none of those stories made his come from behind KO of Walcott any less heroic. The Rock was a warrior!

Much of that SI was pure bull, as I recall. Of course Marciano was human and had plenty of quirks and flaws like anyone, most of which came out in the few years after his boxing career when he let go of the rigid self-discipline he'd been putting himself under for all that time, but he certainly wasn't some kind of a mafia crime-boss pimp. This magazine was made in an era when it was trendy to defame and deflate famous heroes with scandalous material.dws wrote:Anybody read that article in Sport's Illustrated a long time ago on Marciano?I've never seen it but apparently it showed a bit of the Rock's seamier side, mainly his cheapness and sexual kinkiness.I don't care anything about that stuff, mentioning it only because I loved the response a boxing writer gave to the article, dismissing it by saying that none of those stories made his come from behind KO of Walcott any less heroic. The Rock was a warrior!

sums it up.. great man..gave boxing something its lacking today... a true champion..he showed what it meant to have honor and dignity..KO Atrist wrote:A truly great fighter.
The punch of a champion.
The heart of a champion.
The strength of a champion.
The chin of a champion
The guts of a champion.
And most importantly, bowing out of the sport gracefully, with his 100% record intact.
An immaculate record.

born in Brockton,Mass over 60+ years ago...this fight between Julie Durham and Rocky has about 5 different endings now !
way I heard it as a boy. Julie Durham won and beat up Rocky pretty good which INSPIRED him to be a great boxer.
