DEAR MR HASCUP

Post by Rory McCloskey »

being from new jersey, and learning that u were president of the new jersey hall of fame, i figured i would take a look at the official website....when i got there, i immediatly found james j braddock and read the info that was selected for him. i did notice one problem. it says in your bio of braddock that he was born in 1906.. i can undertsand the mistake because there has been issues with his birthdate, and he was actually born on June 7 1905.. i was hoping maybe you would have enough power to have that changed.

Sincerely,
Rory McCloskey

I made the change. I just went by other sources and most had it 1906 instead of 1905.

I have a letter from his widow confirming that date as well -- and it is in my book as such.

Even Amazon references 1906.

Just out of curiousity... what sparked your interest in Braddock, enough so to write a book about his story? Why not Joe Louis, or any of the other early-mid century fighters?

I have been researching boxing for over 30 years -- my book is an outgrowth research I did for Ron Howard and the team at Imagine.

my grandfather use to tell me stories when i was like 5... he grew up a few miles away from where braddock was living during the time of the depression. he met the champ sometime in the late 50's and braddock bought him dinner after my grampa told him he was his hero.

If you join http://www.newspaperarchive.com they have tons of articles on Braddock, as well as just boxing in general, probably around a million total pages. If you do decide to join how about giving my name as a reference to the site. It's a fee-based site, but it continues to grow every day and they are starting to add some of the larger newspapers such as the Oakland Tribune and Syracuse Post and Herald...it's a great site for old newspapers!

Hi Mike

saw you on TV a few days back - National Geographic- talking about Braddock. Very interesting and will do a tape if its repeated. On the rare occasions I tape anything and didnt have a spare tape....

Thanks for the kind words about my book -- by the way I am scheduled to be a "special feature" of the DVD of the movie..

Right now, I am buried finishing editing my doc on the Ali-Maricano computer fight -- http://www.superfightdvd.com

I just did a radio interview with the BBC, by the way!!

ps Barry is on the money -- newspaperarchive is a great resource -- though nothing beats the NYPL!
