remember ur judgjing the way mayweather fought at 130lb so bringing the jose louis castillo arguements into this is useless.

Yes, Mayweather was fast and impressive at 130 pounds. But beat Arguello? He hasn't proved that much noy yet and especially not however many fights ago. Yes, Arguello had trouble with fleet footed boxers; but those fleet of foot fighters had had many many rounds of experience which comes in handy against a classically stylish and dead hard punching (both hands) boxer such as Arguello. He was a whole different proposition than Diego Corrales, not a single similarity beyond the height. Arguello, with that smmoth almost got me defense and the thudding body punches...enough. Alexis by ko between the 5th and the 9th.

At first I was tempted to pick Maywether because of his speed. Fast guys like Vilomar Frenandez, who beat him in a ten round non-title fight, gave him trouble. But the more I thought about it I realized that Mayweather uses his speed differently. He is not the Fernandez, Whitaker,Camacho type of speed; moving around jabbing, throwing jabs and 1,2's and occasionally throwing a body punch or a combination. Mayweather has the Meldrick Taylor, Shane Mosely type of speed, darting in and out, throwing hard flurries and brawling occasionally.
That style will be very dangerous against Arguello, who was a great counter puncher with knockout power in both hands and a great chin to withstand the flurries.
I think Mayweather starts out fast wins the first few rounds, suddenly gets caught with a few hard counters in the middle rounds, maybe tasting the canvas a time or two, then playing it a bit too safe for the rest of the fight.
My call is Arguello split decision, whether the fight is 12 or 15 rounds.
I think Mayweather is a smart enough fighter to keep from getting ko'd.

Just a bit ago I brought this topic up with a friend of mine and he shocked me by picking Mayweather. But theone makes a very good point about how Mayweather utilizes his speed. Another thing is that Arguello fought a variety of clever slick hard to hit fighters, while Mayweather has yet to face anybody remotely similar to Alexis.
A key in this fight would be the jab of Arguello. If he's landing it the fight is close to being over, but landing it isn't the important thing. In several fights that I've seen, against an opponent that was looking to work off of Arguello's jab- slip it it get inside or whatever- he didn't throw it. He'd just lay it out and when the guy got ready to move he found Arguello protecting himself and prepared to hit him coming in and going out. Also Alexis didn't telegraph the right hand as seems to be the rule these days. He shot it straight from the shoulder and the str rt looked much like the rt uppercut to the chest he used so well.
