Alexis Arguello vs Julio Cesar Chavez at 130lbs
Who would've won this explosive matchup and why???
Julio Cesar Chavez would have won a hard fought decision in either 12 or 15 rounds. At 130 and 135 pounds the great Chavez never bled or bruised and his chin would have certainly held up. JCC walked right through everything Ramirez, Mayweather and Rosario threw at him without even blinking. Arguello was dropped by Jose Luis Ramirez and escaped with a split decision. Alexis later admitted that he didn’t even know where he was when Ramirez dropped him. Chavez outboxed Ramirez even with an injured rib.
In his 20s Chavez wasn’t just a straight forward brawler, he had great subtle defensive moves. Chavez was excellent at paring and slipping punches on the inside and expertly delivering his own hooks and uppercuts in return.
Like Olivares and Mancini, Chavez would have built an early lead by taking the fight to Arguello on the inside. Since Chavez had a much better chin and defensive skills than Olivares and Mancini, he would have been able to trade with Alexis and withstand his punches in the later rounds.
Ruben Castillo (who fought Salvador Sanchez, Arguello and Chavez) once said that Chavez was the best fighter he ever faced. I agree.
Chavez by unanimous decision in a hard fought battle.

Chavez would get past Arguello’s jab. If Arguello could not keep Ernesto Marcel, Ruben Olivares, Ray Mancini and Jose Luis Ramirez at the end of his jab, there is no conceivable way that he would have kept Chavez from getting inside the jab and working Arguello over on the inside.
History shows that Arguello struggled with fighters who swarmed him from the inside as he was behind or even in fights against pressure fighters. Only his potent left hooks and uppercuts bailed him out. Chavez was a master of infighting.
Chavez wins a well deserved decision over Arguello.
