Sam has a good chin so will probably flatten Maskaev in 4 or 5 rounds.
Should be an entertaining, as Oleg usualy favours a spectacular Herbie Hide style exit when being knocked out - flying through the ropes, or keeling over stiff as a board.
Sam is good enough to beat Rahman I think. Read his interview over at fightnews and he comes over as an intellegent sort.

Regarding the Sauerland homepage, the Sam-Maskaev fight is the main event. IMO they show this fight live and the Sylvester-fight afterwards. Let´s see.Freiheit wrote:Thanks for the Povetkin advise. IMO Sauerland has now the chance to compete with Don King. Sam would easily beat Rahman, Valuev will end the reign of Ruiz. I don´t give a fornicate on King´s tournament. Provided that Wladi beats Byrd, Sauerland would be the man who rules the division. And the fights will take place in Germany where are anyway the highest purses in Heavyweight.
On this subject i recently watched Maskaev-Rahman for the first time, the knockout was madness. Rahman falls out of the ring and totally disappears under some tables, then immediately after watch closely as a ringside official (looks like Steve Smoger) gets hit full ball of the top of his head by a flying chair! Chaos.
i thought former cruiserweight champion Juan Carlos Gomez earned his shot when he outpointed McCall in that exciting recent fight. either that or he was supposed to fight the Sam-Maskaev winner to determine who would face the WBC champ. I'd like to see Gomez take on Rahman, as Gomez has already dominated Sam. Gomez might be the first cruiser king to win a heavyweight title since Holyfield, something that no one could've seen coming after his blowout loss to Yanqui Diaz.

Sören, what I have heard from Mr. Sauerland is that Sinan is fighting to be the mandatory challenger. I read the interview on fightnews as MW suggested....
A great read and very insightful..... expecially what Sam says about Vitali getting Wlad boosted up the WBC rankings..... its seems that Vitali knew he was on his was out.....
He also mentions, what many of at the time thought, that Universum played him for a fool when they matched him with Gomez....
Would love to see the likeable Sam have the last laugh...

A victory in this fight will get one of the two boxers considerably closer to a world championship fight against either Vitali Klitschko [35-2-0, KO 34] or Hasim Rahman [41-5-1, KOs 33]. Fightnews spoke with Frankfurt-born Sam, who for obscure reasons is named the ‘Bull of the Bosphorus,’ about the upcoming fight against the Kazakhstan-born ‘The Big O’ and the presently somewhat confused situation in heavyweight. Sam also tried to give a prediction on the future development of the international heavyweight scene.

What can you tell us about him?
Oleg Maskaev isn’t exactly heavyweight’s top star, but he has been in the ring with a lot of good boxers and the number of his victories is outstanding. He is a hard-punching guy, his punching power is incredible. For example, as an amateur he knocked out Vitali Klitschko in the first round. He is very strong, but my guess is that he has a weak chin. That’s his weak spot, I don’t think there’s much he can do about it when he meets my punch. So, it looks like one of us is going to be knocked out and I’m hoping of course that it’s not going to be me.
Can you tell us something about the strategy you will be using against Maskaev?
We assume that Maskaev is going to try to knock me out in the first two rounds. He is no technician. Of course I’ll try everything to resist his initial pressure. I am the better boxer. I’m more versatile, and I can put up more pressure. I can build up a lot of pressure and I can keep it up for a long, long time. I have to stop him from rushing me and I have to block him, right from the beginning. And I’m going to find the weak spots in his cover, if he really has a weak chin he won’t have an easy time with me. Of course, at the same time I have to watch out and see that I keep my own guard up, because with Maskaev that could easily go very, very wrong. After all, the guy has got quite an impressive punch.
That means you expect a knockout?
I’m sure of that. It‘s going to be a KO. I hope, of course, that it will be Maskaev. I’m quite sure it’s going to be him. But then again, it is boxing, and it’s heavyweight, and there everything is possible.

We have got a problem with the WBC. In the WBC, everybody is waiting for the moment when Vitali [Klitschko] steps back, and that is expected to be soon. But nobody knows anything, there are only rumours. The speculations went even higher when Vitali used all his influence to place his brother Wladimir [45-3-1, KOs 40] on one of the first three positions of the WBC ranking list. And that after Wladimir had won both an IBF and a WBO eliminator [against Samuel Peter, 2005-09-24, Atlantic City/USA, W 12], that is he doesn’t even need such a ranking. And, what is more, the statutes of the WBC do not actually allow such a procedure. So, everybody thinks that Vitali Klitschko, after a win against [Hasim] Rahman, will box only one more fight. The WBC already gave him permission for a voluntary title defence after a victory over Rahman. The assumption is that Vitali wants a fight against Chris Byrd [IBF heavyweight champion, 39-2-1, KOs 20]. They say that Vitali is going to try everything, use every trick in the book, to take revenge for his defeat [2000-04-01, Berlin/Germany TKO 10 for the WBO heavyweight title]. That’s a score he still has to settle with him. It is something he wants to clarify, one way or the other. If the WBC agrees to a unification match remains to be seen.
So, I’m polishing my crystal ball now and tell you what I think could happen: if I win the Maskaev fight I would have to box the highest-ranked fighter for the vacant title. Should Wladimir stay on top till then it would be Wladimir. But if Wladimir boxes Lamon Brewster [33-2-0; KOs 29] for the WBO title, then they would ask Juan Carlos Gomez [40-1-0, KOs 33] or James Toney [69-4-2, KOs 43], at least that’s what I think could happen. Gomez, because he beat McCall [2005-10-15, Duesseldorf/Gemany, W 10] and Toney because, although he was downgraded, his management keeps trying to push him. Of course, the best what could happen is that Vitali would finally have the nerve to face me in the ring.
But Toney was found guilty of doping.
Toney was doped, that’s right. [Toney fought for the WBA Heavyweight title against John Ruiz 2005-04-30, New York/USA. This fight was originally a unanimous decision win for Toney. Following this bout Toney was tested positive for banned substance – anabolic steroids - and the decision was changed in No Contest.] As a consequence he was suspended and actually, he should now be keeping a low profile. But on the other hand, let’s face it, we are talking about professional boxing, and this is business with a lot of money involved. Toney has a big and very influential TV channel supporting him, and this is why I think Toney is still in the game.
You saw Gomez‘ last fight …
Yes, Gomez beat McCall and with that victory he has moved high up on the list. But in reality Gomez is not worth talking about. Everybody could see that he isn’t the Gomez anymore that he once was.
But you still have a score to settle with him.
Of course. And I would like to settle that account [2003-09-26, Buffalo/USA, L 10] once and for all. But I have also changed - I’m also not the boxer I once was. I have grown a lot these past two years, I am so much better now. I don’t even care if Gomez is in good shape or not. What counts is the shape I am in. Back then I had not been ready for such a fight. To put it bluntly, the promoter I was with then [Universum Box-Promotion] played me for a sucker. It was much too early to send me into such a fight.
You have been demanding a fight against Vitali Klitschko for quite some time now.
Right.
Why are you so keen on that match?
For two reasons. First, because I know Vitali from sparring [when Sam and Klitschko were both working for Universum Box Promotion]. I know what he can do and I know what I can do. Second, and even more important, because at present there is no other real heavyweight champion but Vitali. All the big names are gone. Evander Holyfield is gone, Riddick Bowe is not there anymore. Mike Tyson is gone. Vitali is one of the last action heroes. He has that aura. Where Vitali is there are the TV channels and the fat purses. Vitali has what all the others are lacking, a bit of hype. Well, maybe Lamon Brewster might be in the same league, because of his victory over Luan [Krasniqi, 2005-09-29, Hamburg/Germany, TKO 9]. Brewster would also be an interesting opponent for me, especially here in Germany. But I don’t think I have much chances, there are already others trying to get that fight.
But in spite of these rational reasons one gets the impression that there is something personal between you and Vitali Klitschko, something that ...
Vitali and Wladimir have become stars and they feel invincible. They believe they are untouchable just because they did five Kellogg’s commercials and six for ‘Milchschnitte’ [a snack for kids]. They believe they are the big shots. Ok, Vitali has proved that he is a great fighter, but Wladimir still ows the world that proof. For me, Wladimir is a pansy. And both of them always talked so condescendingly about my manager [Ahmed Oener] and me. They said things like: Sam is a good boy and strong, but he is not in the same league. All I can say is that they can be glad that they sold so well as a twin towers package and that the German press has taken a liking to them. That is what they are living on now. We were in the same gym but Universum always regarded me as just as an appendage of the Klitschkos. I know that I can beat them, so why shouldn’t I attack and challenge them? That’s what boxing is about.
This fight against Oleg Maskaev gives me the opportunity to get to a position where nobody can pass me by anymore. All the big names in heavyweight that came to Germany won their fights. Chris Byrd defeated Vitali. Michael Moorer beat Axel Schulz [1996-06-22, Dormund/Germany for the IBF heavyweight title, W 12]. That the world champion 2006 should be Sinan Samil Sam! And then, of course, health for my family.

King has spoken about it today (see my other thread). Looks like he has resigned to the fact that Rahman will face the Maskaev vs Sam winner. He also knows that Ruiz vs Valuev has to happen, this is a much tougher fight to call. Not sure who I favour - I was dissapointed with Valuev last time out and remember Donald was lucky to get a draw vs Ray Austin of all people.

You're right. I just remembered about what would see Maskaev-Gomez being touted as the 'final' eliminator, but that fight could only happen end Jan/Feb, so the winner wouldn't be available until April/May-ish (just a guess.) I'm sure Mr Dong would want Rachman fighting before then.
