Michael Spinks vs Rocky Marciano@ Heavyweight (PRIME)
Michael Spinks vs Rocky Marciano@ Heavyweight (PRIME)
How would this fight go?Remember Spinks moved up to Heavy
(199 1/2lbs,or so)He would have the reach, height, speed etc.And he was awkward. But so was Rocky, watch some of the clips of Marciano, and how awkward he was.Could Spinks "gangle" his way out of harm, and land enough punches to eek out a decision? If Marciano lands,it's over.Spinks could take a punch, but remember Tyson landing his bombs. And while Tyson was bigger and quicker than Marciano,Rocky would definitely be dropping bombs.I think Marciano wins by mid rds K.O.(And Spinks was one of my favorites)

Lets see, Spinks at 6'2" and 199, and Marciano at 5'10 and 188.
Spinks had an 8 inch pull in the reach dept.
The biggest factor in Spinks losing to Tyson (apart from Tyson being just about the perfect fighter on the night) was Spinks' fear.
Would Spinks be as fearful against Marciano, who on paper had no physical advantages, but must have had a big advantage in strength.
I see Spinks proving an awkward opponent for Marciano, and maybe landing his famed Spinks jinx. He might even rattle Rocky.
Eventually, I see Marciano getting to grips with Spinks herky jerky style with a stoppage, for the full count, in eight or nine rounds.

Marciano would win this one by KO. That is a virtual guarantee. Spinks was a great light-heavyweight, and he did get two bad decisions against a shopworn Larry Holmes. But Spinks was never impressive as a heavyweight. The only time he fought a young, hungry heavyweight it was a no contest.
I prefer to remember fighters as they were in their prime, meaning I will always consider Spinks a 175 lb'er. And a great one at that.

prime spinx was not better than moore, and if u think moore wasnt at his best when he fought rocky than u need to check up on ur facts. moore 45-1 in his last 46 fights and was coming off a knockout win over HOF harold johnson!!!!!!theone wrote:If Charles and Moore gave Marciano trouble, than Spinks would have been handful for him as well. At that point in their careers, a prime spinks was better than both the mongoose and the cobra.
However i still pick Marciano by ko very late in the fight after a fantastic contest.
charles of the 1st marciano fight was better than spinx. i might add rocky had no trouble with charles in the rematch
moore did nott give marciano trouble besides the knockdown, marciano won practiclally every round.

I mentioned this once, but didn't see a responce, so I gave up looking..But as great as Dempsey was / Louis / marciano / Jack Johnson / Wolcott, etc, etc...Rocky, for instance, was not more than 180-190 in weight, so I can't see a heavyweight back then KO ing anyone today..These guys are big and powerfull, even Tye fields, who has little skills, is HUGE, and to think that Joe Louis, or Rocky would ever even hurt Foreman or Frazier, or Tyson is hard to imagine, HOWEVER, I heard once, from a Marciano fan, and I do not know if it true or not----He said Joe Louis watched frazier hitting the heavy bag, and said rocky hit it a bit harder ..but don't quote ME on that

first of, guys like louis dempsey and marciano were exceptions and could and would beat the bigger guys of today. they all depsite ther weight hit harder than the bigguys today, much more stamina, heart, power, skill, and they could take a much. they also had the strength to deal with the guys today
- i might add dempsey and marciano were well over 200lb, they trained them self down to that weight. had they been fighting today, expect there handlers to take advantage of the technology and have them go on an intense program and they would come in at 200-210 with retraining there stamina.
Dr. Vooh, its been proven that marciano hits as hard with one punch as 6'6 250lb wlad kltischko one of the hardest hitters today. wlad hits 1100 PSI, and marciano hits over 1000 PSI. now imagine the fact marciano throws many more punches per round than wlad which makes him deadly.
joe louis was BIGGER THAN FRAZIER
joe louis 6'2 207lb
joe frazier 5'11 202lb
so if u think louis cant knock out a smaller man ur insanse!
i might add louis, marciano, dempsey all; knocked out bigger man than foreman.
dempsey in fact was at his best against the bigger fighters.
u have to understand, in heavyweight division size does not mean as much. 200-260 is not the same disadvantage as 100-160lb. 185lb to 210lb is not that much of size difference.
punching power is natural. louis , dempsey, marciano were blessed with poower of a much bigger man.
- John garfield a old knowledgeable poster. barry knows him. he saw marciano live, and he said he watchged foreman, liston, marciano all hit the bag and he says marciano hits just as hard as them.
u think the 60s-modern champs were so big???
in fact they were much bigger than the past champs
larry holmes 6'3 210lb
liston 6'1 212lb
foreman 6'3 217lb
joe frazier 5'11 203lb
those 4 guys would be SMALL heavyweights today
If they were naturally well over 200lbs. maybe they dropped down so much for a reason. With his size, reach and style of fighting Rocky fought at his optimum weight for effectiveness. Any heavier he would be slower and even more clumsy than before. Dempsey with his frame i could see carrying the weight comfortable but what made him so efficent was his speed. Slick fighters caused him trouble already imagine if he were slower.i might add dempsey and marciano were well over 200lb, they trained them self down to that weight. had they been fighting today, expect there handlers to take advantage of the technology and have them go on an intense program and they would come in at 200-210 with retraining there stamina.
This is absolute bullshit. If Marciano hit as hard as you think he did, he would have had a hell of alot more one punch ko's. It took him alot of punches to ko most of his opponents. The punch ko were more a product of guys already being worn down.Dr. Vooh, its been proven that marciano hits as hard with one punch as 6'6 250lb wlad kltischko one of the hardest hitters today. wlad hits 1100 PSI, and marciano hits over 1000 PSI.
Louis fought around that weight at the tail end of his career. The last fight Frazier had at 202 was in his second year of being a pro.joe louis was BIGGER THAN FRAZIER
joe louis 6'2 207lb
joe frazier 5'11 202lb

thats why with modern nutrition, weight lfiting, supplements, technoology , etc dempsey and marciano could easily carry the extra weight. dempsey being skinnier, and marciano being incredibly big boned.
dempsey today would loook like holyfield
marciano today would look like tyson

marciano after walcott fights, changed his style and he lost some power because of it.
watch pre 1954 marciano - marciano vs layne, walcott, mathews, vingo, etc
not to mention all of marcianos early victims were one punch knockouts
u see its not bullshit, i gave u the proof. u just dont want to belive it.
fact is, fighters are born with that kind of power. marciano had god gifted power. thats all i can say.
- marciano broke bones and blood vessells in lastarzas arns requiring 6 different surgeris on lastarzas arms. that made joe frazier say after watching alis rope a dope "he wouldnt be able to do that against marciano"
- marciano sent rex laynes teeth flying accross the ring with one right hand. the same layne who took bob satterfields best punches
Burt Sugar said of Marciano's right hand power punch, called the "Suzie-Q", "It was one of the most devastating weapons ever brought into a ring."
How does a 187 pound man hit harder than a 200+ pound man when both are trained fighters? There's an axiom in boxing that says "You can’t teach power. Either a fighter is born with it or not."
"Joe could take you out with combinations...Marciano was a one-punch artist. He threw every punch like you throw a baseball, as hard as he could. I have to say, with all respect to Joe, Marciano hit harder."- walcott
Jack Dempsey, interviewed in the 1953 fall edition of Fight magazine said, "What everyone forgets is that Marciano can punch harder with a right hand than any modern-day heavyweight. In his first fight with Walcott, Rocky needed only one blow to win the title. The power in his right scrambled Jersey Joe's brains at Chicago."
"I've scored my share of knockouts along the way, but more often than not my opponents got up after being knocked down and had to be knocked down repeatedly. The same is true of Joe Louis. But Marciano needs only one solid smash and it's all over.
That's why I say Rocky Marciano is the hardest-hitting heavyweight champion I have seen."
"Marciano's gloved fists broke blood vessels and bones in LaStarza's arms and elbows. First the arms grew heavy, then they began to ache awfully, then they grew numb. As the relentless battle wore on, LaStarza found it harder and harder to raise his arms, much less jab with them or punch with them. His hands lowered, his defense dissipated, Marciano began to punish him about the head. LaStarza began to take a terrible beating." Bill Libby, "The Story of a Champion", 1971.
Fred Brown said, "He hits you with something that looks like a little tap to the crowd, but the guy who gets it shakes right down to his legs."
"Louis is faster with a barrage of punches, but Rocky hurts more with one punch than Joe did with four. Rocky hurts you every time he connects." Response to a reporter from a sparring partner of both Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano.
Of coarse Joe would say that. Rocky beat him so he couldnt imply Fraizer may have had the power to do so. Joe also said that Ali would have been as easy for him to beat as Johnny Paycheck was. Joe also says that he thought he really won the first Walcott fight and he was leaving the ring early because he saw no need to stay. So dont take the brown bombers words as gospel. He said Joe Louis watched frazier hitting the heavy bag, and said rocky hit it a bit harder ..but don't quote ME on that

wow ur smart, but u say some ridiculous things sometimesLouis fought around that weight at the tail end of his career. The last fight Frazier had at 202 was in his second year of being a pro.
in 1942, in louis prime, lousi weighed 207lb vs abe simon and buddy baer.
his one round dominatiion of buddy baer II, led many historians including nat flesicher to believe that was louis peak fight.
louis was 27 then!
i say louis 6'2 207lb because his peak might have been that 2nd buddy baer fight. though it was prob the schmeling fight
frazier at his peak was anywhere from 200-205lb
Name one of those bigger men who were anywhere near as good as Foreman
louis 6'2 207lb
foreman 6'3 217lb- THATS NOTHING
foreman had trouble with 195lb peralta TWICE.
- none of those guys were as good, but they wer tough durable fighters

When Marciano was destroying all challengers with his blockbuster assault, the U.S. Testing Co. was asked to measure the power of Rocky's wallop. Its findings:
"Marciano's knockout blow packs more explosive energy than an armour-piercing bullet and represents as much energy as would be required to spot lift 1000 pounds one foot off the ground."- Boxing Illustrated December 1963

Re: BrocktonBlockbuster49
joe frazier 5'11 202lb
Correction: as Foreman said when Frazier passed: "Joe never saw 5'10"
And speaking as one 6'0 who stood eye to eye with Joe shaking hands (after roadwork with him) I can attest George was surely right, and that Joe was 5'9ish
