where did Tyson's power come from?

he must have been naturally hard hitting, because throws such short looping hooks. i think that the fact he could maintain such a hard hitting punch and have that speed was because he didnt have long slow punches, they were short n sweet, which one wouldnt think would be arguably the hardest punches delivered in boxing history.

That IS power.

I can't stand Tyson, but I've never seen anyone hit the heavybag with more perfect power punching form (not even Squatdog) He's just a treat to watch the way he puts his full weight into every punch.

i agree part of that was true, tyson was a technicially flawless puncher and part of punching power is tehcnique, accuracy, speed. but tyson defintley had snap into his punches and power. his power reminded me of joe louis, it woud paralyse you.
i mean look what happend when tyson lost his punching skills, even late in his career he knocked out people with 1 or 2 punches.
tyson knocked out larry holmes cold after that 3rd knockdown, no fighter not even in the 90s could come close to doing that

Its a little like a baseball swing, certian players have A perfect swing, others have mashing power, and some like Bonds (juiced or not) have both. Tyson had both in his percision and his right left hooks and uppers.

Basically, Tyson had perfect technique and as a result his leverage was excellent.
His hand speed and combination punching was superb.
IMO he is the fastest punching HW of all times.

Marciano, like Tyson, put his entire weight behind his punches.

Seamus,
Spoken like a true gentleman.Even if you don't care for somebody, one must give credit where it is due.I don't like Tyson(the person) either, but in his prime, man ,could he fight & punch,

floyd patterson?
eversnb, good point. guys like tyson , marciano, louis they got there weight behind there punches. then u got guys like klitschko who clearly dont get there weight behind there punches, and that makes them less effective
tyson's ko power

Brockton, I'd say all of the above, PLUS it helps if the puncher has the lateral muscle size that Tyson does. I think Holyfield's are actually bigger than Iron Mike's, but both those guys' lats are as big as my friggen leg.

I recently watched an interview on ESPN Classic with Larry Holmes and when asked about the Tyson fight, he pointed out that when he was dropped for the final time, he was setting Tyson up for an uppercut and when he went to throw it his arm got caught in the ropes, which left him wide open and defenseless. That, according to him, was the reason that Tyson knocked him out cold. Now, I'm not sure if that's the reason why Tyson knocked Holmes out cold, but I went back to watch my copy of the fight in slow motion and sure enough, as Holmes said, he was attempting to throw and uppercut and got it caught in the ropes, which left him wide open and sure enough, Tyson nailed him and it was all over.
