Peter Blackwell -v- Bill Reeves

Post by Brute »

On checking the records of Australian Heavyweights Bill Reeves and Peter Blackwell, both of whom were active in 1971, I noted that you did not record a fight between them which I remember seeing on the TCN Channel 9 program "TV Ringside" which broadcast fights promoted at the South Sydney Leagues Club by Ern McQuillan. The fight was either in late 1970 or early 1971. From memory Reeves knocked Blackwell out in the first round (Referee stopped fight after Blackwell did not react well after knockdown).

I did not know either fighter personally, but know that Blackwell ran a tattoo parlour in the Sydney Suburb of East Hills, and Reeves worked as a bouncer with Australian Middleweight Bernie "Bronco" Hourigan, who trained with me at Bernie Hall's Gym.

A friend of mine who lived at East Hills saw Blackwell at the East Hills Hotel (pub) a day or two after the fight. Big Pete was cursing the referee saying "He shouldn't have sopped the fight! I was strong!" To which one of the local hard-heads said "Yeah. But only under the armpits."

Perhaps you could check if I remember it correctly.
