Pre-1900 prizefighters?

Post by tonyevs »

What site offers the best info on the older prizefighters.

I am doing a little research on Yankee Sullivan and at best the only source that gives anything is the few archive newspapers I know of.

There has been to the best of my knowledge no research on this interesting character.

Cyber boxing zone did not even list all the important fights he had, so can anybody give a little info on where to find a little more?

Tony, try the Brooklyn Daily Eagle site and have a look through their old newspaper archives. That site's loaded with a bunch of great info on that period of time (mid to late 1800's), and they're all written by first hand accounts. Very easy to use too, as a simple search for the name of a fighter brings up plenty of info.

I think the site address is; http://www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/eagle

is he the fella that had a rivalry with john morrisey. i read a story about those two, they were leaders of gangs and brawled everytime they laid eyes on each other, in bars, behind warehouses, where ever. one of them held the other down on hot coals that spilt from a fire turned over in one particular fight they had hence the nickname old smoke.
i think sullivan died pennyless but i`m sure morrisey ended up in the senate, became really really rich and owned saratoga race track amongst other business interests. i`ll try and dig the story out.

He beat Morrisey but left the prize-ring before he should have, or something like that anyway.

He died in a prison, supposedly he committed suicide.

We had a little thread on him before .
