Michael Watson's amateur record

Post by Greg Nicholas »

Michael Watson was the 1980 British schoolboy champ at 156, he lost only two fights out of 20 in Britain and they were against a kid called Garry Sanderson in the 1981 Junior ABA final because he was very over-confident and Scotland's Russell Barker in the semi-finals of the 1984 British ABA's because he was very, very over-confident. I know he won the London ABA's. He was an international, beat Dan Sherry and Shawn O'Sullivan at the Canada Cup in 83. He went 1-1 with Rod Douglas (lost to Douglas at Canada Cup). He represented Western Europe against Detroit in 1981, stopped by Don Lee (who he later beat in the pro's). He lost 3-2 to Michael Nunn in 1984 at 165 just before the Olympics, may of been at the Canada Cup. He went to Los Angeles with the Great Britain team for the Olympics as an alternate (Nunn was an alternate for USA, by the way), despite having beaten Brian Schumacher twice previously.

Was he a candidate to go to the 1984 Olympics? Who went in his division?

He was fully-expected to go to the 1984 Olympics and face Michael Nunn. They had a very high-quality fight in Detroit in which Nunn won 4-1 but Watson came close to knocking him out three or four times with his right hand in round three. After the fight, Nunn said "See you in LA" to Watson.

I don't know who went to the Olympics instead of Watson, Watson losing to Barker cancelled him out of the Olympics. I know Rod Douglas went to the Olympics in the 156 class and was robbed against Shawn O'Sullivan of Canada (and in turn, O'Sullivan was robbed against Tate in the final).

Michael Watson, of Islington (Eng) did not participate at 1984 Olympics, nor Michael Nunn, who was beated by Virgil Hill at Olympic Trials. Watson's place in British olympic team was filled by Brian Schumacher, of Liverpool (Eng).

Great Britain went to Los Angeles's Olympics with a whole team, but only won a Bronze medal. This is the 1984 British olympic team:

1 Robert Wells (+91) -- Bronze medal
2 Douglas Young (91)
3 Anthony Wilson (81)
4 Brian Schumacher (75)
5 Roderick Douglas (71)
6 Michael Hughes (69)
7 David Griffiths (63,5)
8 Alex Dickson (60)
9 Kevin Taylor (57)
10 John Hyland (54)
11 Patrick Clinton (51)
12 John Lyon (48
