Khaliq emerges!

Australian Chad Bennett (17-1-3) will challenge Jawaid Khaliq (23-1-1) for IBO welterweight crown in Newcastle, NSW, Australia on March 25. Chad Bennett currently holds the IBO intercontinental 147 pound title. He defended the championship successfully in November when he easily outpointed over twelve rounds well credentialed Ariel Aparicio (24-7) of Argentina in November 2005 at Melbourne, Victoria. Khaliq defeated former WBO jnr welterweight champion Enur Julio by twelve round decision in February 2004 to win the IBO world championship in Nottingham, England.

Good to see Khaliq back, if only to see the word "credentialed" used in the fight build up. If he has been out so long though why is he still in possession of the IBO belt? I thought he would have sold it on the market, used it to hold his trousers up or on Ebay to the highest bidder or something, get some use out of it.

Good to see Khaliq back, hope he hasn't lost the talent he had with his long lay off!

That must have been one hell of a big taxi fare he just had.

Good he's back though, and as numpty says, I hope the layoff won't overly affect him

Does anyone know why he's been out of the ring for nearly 2 years?

Wow, I figured he'd long retired.

Is he still IBO champion, and if so, how can he hang on to his title for so long (2 years)?

He was getting on a bit when I last saw him fight, and was looking increasingly fragile. He's 35 YO now... probably a bit past it.

I've asked a few people and have yet to come up with a satisfactory answer. I was assured nothing was wrong with him and he was ready and willing to fight. Fishy though, you have to say.

He's on a Gilmour show up in Scotland instead. Can't remember the date but it's quite soon.

That's ok - if it's the fight that's fallen through and not Khaliq's comeback. Probably better to have a tune-up or two if he is planning on a return anyway. It's not the Kevin Anderson card is it?
