Boxings All Time Showboaters

Post by Seamus »

Muhammad Ali has to be number 1, but who were some of the others with outlandish behaviour in the ring. Jason Corbett and Ray "Windmill" White come to mind. You could say Sugar Ray Leonard, but I don't think he did it on a consistent enough basis.

Some names

Post by tagjohnson »

I'm surprised no one mentioned him but when it comes to flash nobody in boxing history can come close to John Ruiz. And how about the razzle dazzle of Eddie Mustapha Muhammad? And how about the one man circus that was Jimmy Ellis? And does anyone remember the grandiose entrances that Vito Antufermo would make? It like Liberace with boxing gloves!

Ray Leonard's taunting was the most embarrassing and disgraceful, I think.

Roberto Duran taunted quite a bit. But he made it look good. He was genuinely not a nice person, and very vicious.

Naz and Sugar Ray have to be up there. How about battling Bozo? Max Baer for his time. Camacho Sr I agree. Tyson and Golata....but not on purpose.

i dont know manassa, leonards antics certainly threw hagler off his game and made duran quit so I think his showboating and taunting did pay off. IMO leonards 7th round taunting of duran was genuis! i mean who else would start trying to embarrass and taunt one of the greatest fighters of all time and a man considered so invinsible. leonard got to his head. that last windmill jab had the crowd laughing. it was enough to make a grown man cry ,or quit.

Was I halucinating or was Naz carried to the ring down the aisle on some kind of magic f...in carpet for the Berrara fight? I wonder if they carried him back up the aisle on it after the fight?

Leonard would have beaten Duran without the showboating. Leonard would have won that fight no matter what tactics he employed.

I don't think it had any bearing on the Hagler fight. Ray won by keeping the distanmce between him and marvina nd forcing Marvin to lead.

The showboating is a lazy analysis.

I often wonder how a fighter like Fritzie Zivic , Bummy Davis, or Greb would react to an opponent trying to humiliate them with showboating and taunts. Im thinking the old thumbs would be coming out among other things.
