Warren shock statement: Khan will not be rushed!

Post by MightyWarrior »

Wow, thanks for the warning Frank :D

He says he finds it amazing people are talking about Khan's opponents. Well of course they are, seeing as he's prime time main event on ITV.

And implying his opponents are the same level as Ray Leonard is a bit misleading. Ray was facing fellow hot prospect Willie Rodriguez in only his 2nd fight - a fighter who went onto to hold his own in world class for years.
Doubt we'll see anything like that for Khan for a loooong time yet.

BBC -
Amir Khan's promoter allegedly says he will not rush his fighter into a title match despite calls for the 19-year-old to face sterner tests.
Khan has breezed through his first five professional fights and beat Belarussian Vitali Martynov in 75 seconds in Nottingham on Saturday.

Warren said: "We're making the right moves. We're not putting him top of the bill, so we are not having people on.
"Let's not start saying he should be fighting for a world title right now."

Khan remains ineligible to fight for a British title until he turns 20 next December but he could fight for a different belt beforehand.
Amir still has a lot to learn but he is adapting well as a pro. I can't tell you how good I think he looks

But Warren added: "For us to even be discussing his opponents after just five fights I find amazing.
"Muhammad Ali fought someone called Donnie Fleeman in his fifth fight while Sugar Ray Leonard fought a guy with four wins and 10 losses.

"Given his age, his experience and the pressures he had, Amir was fantastic (against Martynov).
"He still has a lot to learn but he is adapting well as a pro. I just can't tell you how good I think he looks."
Khan will soon learn the identity of his next opponent as he prepares for his sixth professional bout on 25 February, on the undercard of Danny Williams v Matt Skelton at London's ExCel Arena.

I'm happy with his level of opponent so far. In another 5 fights I won't be too happy if he is facing men who look like they are facing a firing squad.

Warren was already slating audley harrisons opponents by his 5th fight (Marck Krence 11-0) all be it he didn't fight as often.

I really think Kahn should have stayed in the ametres for a bit then he would have had 2 aba's one world championship one jr world chapmionship and the commonwealths comming up. That would be worth much more in expereance in my book.

He is fighting next month and the month after I would hope one of those fighters will be someone just below british level (for the sake of boxrec dean would be good ;-)

Im happy with his opponents but not extatic

He may not be the top of the bill on the shows, but when he is the boxer shown on ITV1 and all the show buildup is about him, then the main event is on ITV4. For the non-boxing fan it looks like Khan is the main event.

"We're not putting him top of the bill"

Yeah right!

Why the hell have we gotta turn over to ITV 4 to watch the "top of the bill" then.

I was all for him turning pro, but that was because I thought he would learn more in the pro ranks to enable him to really take it to the top guys when he was ready.

But he is learning nothing at all fighting what he is, if anything these kind of mis-matches may well damage his development, because it could lead to him getting into bad habits inside and outside the ropes.

I now think he would have been better to have stayed amateur, atleast the level of competition would be on an even footing and for that reason he would be learning more and further developing his skills.

I was thinking that in and around Khan's 12 pro fight, maybe he should aim for the European title. Looking at Naseem's career. Naz fought and beat the tough Vincenzo Belcastro for the European title on points on his 12th pro fight. Before that, he'd not been beyond 6 rounds.

Khan would also be around the same age as Naz was when he got to that stage.

If Khan is to be as good a fighter as we believe he should be I don't think going for the European title in around that time scale would be a bad move and he could get great experance out of it before he'd progress on.

Any thoughts? :box:

The light-welter is a much deeper division, so to compare him to Naz in fight2fight is unfair and not realistic.

Naz, whilst falling a million miles short of what he promised still achieved much, much more than most British fighters ever have before.

Khan will do well to achieve half of what Naz did.

Naz was a fantastic fighter, that is for sure and he done so much in his career. I'm not comparing Khan and Naz as fighters, I'm going on a scale of when I think Khan should up his level and I think being on the European stage around then would be good.

The European title could well open up then and be passed around a few fighters if Witter gets a world title shot and if that would happen, I think if Khan got into that Mix it would be good for him.

I may have worded it wrong, but I used Naz as an example of timing when he went for that title, was not trying to compared Amir and Naseem as fighters.
