i've always liked his sheer enthusiasm for it all. he's a real boxing trainspotter and it comes across in his commentary.

his commentary in the early days was pants. :-? but he's improved with time and is almost like one of the family these days. :D

a true commentating legend. :TU: :box:

It might just be the fact that I'm getting used to him these days, but I swear he's getting better. Still nowhere near Darke's level though, that bloke has a great voice for commentry.

I'd say he's ok, has the enthusiasm and doesn't drive me mad like Rawling and Neilly do...

He's good, think it showed on Friday just how good Jim Watt is as a co-commentator. There have been less and less complaints on here about Smith over the last few weeks. First commentary with Glenn for a long time and the complaints start to happen.

Glenn is pretty good, but Jim Watt along with Teddy Atlas are the best two colour commentators on either side of the atlantic.

I agree with the general sentiment on this one - he is not great, but he's getting better and his enthusiasm is infectious. Still prefer Darke, of course, but he seems to be doing more of the footy these days. Oh well.

Improved greatly from when he first came on the scene. He used to
be very rude to some of the boxers he interviewed.

Loved the time he covered the Williams-Potter thriller. Smith must
have come close to having a Cardiac arrest when Williams found that
amazing left hook. :o

Not that I pay much attention to the bloke but Smith really comes across as an actor at times. Nobody that was used to boxing would wet themselves the way he does every time a half decent scrap happens. He goes over the top and it doesn't sound good. Sorry but it's not enthusiasm, he's trying to convince viewers that they're witnessing something extraordinary when much of the time they're not. I find Smith quite patronising and often have to turn the volume down.

Having said all that he deserves a pint for the way he quizzed Hatton about "considering other options" while FW was standing right next to them. A truly hilarious moment.

He is absolutely bloody awful. He's an enthusiastic trier who is slowly improving but that voice and intonation is so annoying that the fact that he talks slightly less than uniterrupted bollocks these days doesn't bring him up much further in my estimation.

It was me. He was at Warwick Uni from 90-93....and he was a theatre studies student.
Was also part of a group of 'elite' public schoolboys who called themselves 'The Decadents' and wore 'fetching' pink and blue checked rugby shirts... with collars up of course.

Jesus. Deserter that does sound bad.... Not sure whats worth those posh types or the Chavs that I was lecturing last year. Mister inventor of the baseball cap was making a fortune. I was lecturering a class of 30 once and 5 were not wearing one - and two of them were over 40.

I am still a student, but I blooming get annoyed with anyone who isn't individual not to go around in some kind of uniform or dress code - whether it is stuff like you mentioned, Chav gear with the rest of the classmates, or stuff like Rugby boys and their uniforms.

He is a complete tit in my opinion. I always turn down the volume when he's commentating. If the 40 year olf virgin option wasn't made we would get a better idea of what people think.

I think the 40 yr old virgin option has given us an adequate insight!

In short. Sensationalist toff, who's never laced a glove in his life!! About as qualified to tell the public about boxing as Pete Burns.

Lol @ 'The Decadents'. Utter Virgin!!!

I prefer Darke but I don’t mind Smith.

Just because he couldn’t jab his way through a paper bag doesn’t mean he can’t be considered as a commentator IMO.

He doesnt actually commentate enough on action in the ring for my liking. Whole rounds seem to go by without him picking out individual punches or action.

Probably because he doesn't know really what he is looking at. I could be wrong, he could be one of the most foremost boxing historians, but I think he is more there for atmosphere.

I suppose he could be worse, he could be Jim McNeilly :o

almost makes everyone else seem good, it's a shame Darke doesn't do so much these days
