Jezzamundo's dream heavyweight tournament

Post by jezzamundo »

This is in reponse to the previous "dream heavyweight tournament" topic.

The eight boxers i have chosen to fight to be the champion of champions are:

Muhammad Ali
Joe Louis
Larry Holmes
George Foreman
Rocky Marciano
Joe Frazier
Lennox Lewis
Mike Tyson

The format for the tournament is as follows:
And then take the 8 of them away to fight in a heavyweight boxing league where they have to fight each other twice and the points are as follows:

+3 Win by KO/referee stoppage
+1 Win by points
0 Draw
-1 lose on points
-3 lose by KO/referee stoppage...
Please vote for the first round of fights by choosing a winner (or a draw) and the way of victory. All fights are over 12 rounds. Fighters are assumed to be in their prime years i.e. not having a perfect night, but fighting as you would expect them to in their prime years (not just form from a couple of great fights).

1st round fights:
Ali vs Tyson
Louis vs Lewis
Holmes vs Frazier
Foreman vs Marciano

You need to replace Lewis with either Dempsey, or Johnson.

Why are the fights 12 rounds???... they must be 15 to be really bonafide I think... the 12 distance is a stupid rule which was brought in to allow broadcasters to include advertising....

anyway...

Ali vs Johnson.... Ali on points.... too fast!...
Louis vs Dempsey... Louis by ko in 9 rounds...
Holmes vs Frazier ...Holmes on points...
Foreman vs Marciano ....Foreman by Ko in 3....

second round....

Ali vs Louis.... Ali by ko in 14 rounds....
Holmes vs Foreman ...Holmes on points

The final!!!....

Ali vs Holmes... a master class of heavyweight speed and science!... Ali on points!... too fast!!!. :box: :box: :box:

Aw, cmon!

All I want is your tips for the fights I posted. I rate Johnson 8th in my all-time list, and Dempsey 9th. If it were a 10 man tournament they would both be there, but they are not, so get over it!

Lewis is in there because I rate him 7th, and Tyson because I find him to be a very entertaining and interesting fighter (although 12th in my all-time list).

Again, please vote for the fights below:

Ali vs Tyson
Louis vs Lewis
Holmes vs Frazier
Foreman vs Marciano

Ali TKO Tyson RD 10 ( 1 arm deeply bitten in the 9th during a clinch but Ali insists on continuing.)

Louis KO Lewis RD 8 Non eventful pummeling. Just another bum on the tour

Frazier TKO Holmes RD 10 (Holmes comes back to win back to back return fights but this fight was the initial fight that set off the great trilogy.)

Foreman KO's Rocky RD 4 Similar in style and substance to Foreman-Frazier II

Dempsey KO1 Louis (Both men down twice)

Foreman TKO7 Marciano (cuts)

Ali W15 Johnson (Ali wins on the back foot, and survives a couple of scary moments)

Holmes TKO13 Frazier (Frazier, stopped on the ropes with both eyes closed)

Dempsey KO11 Foreman (Dempsey down four times but stops an exhausted Foreman late)

Holmes W15 Ali (Ali wastes rounds showboating whilst Holmes scores with the firmer jab and right cross)

Final

Holmes W15 Dempsey (Holmes down in the 10th and 13th but survives to win 9-4 with 2 even.

Holmes W15 Ali (Ali wastes rounds showboating whilst Holmes scores with the firmer jab and right cross)

ya right

ali in his prime would have thoroughly beaten holmes. all night the old ali wanted to throw his trademark double right over holmes left and he saw the opening but he was FAR to shot to capitalize on it.

i mean the "ya right" to ali showboating. not "ya right" holmes wouldnt beat ali. ali would not play around the whole fight with a great fighter like larry.

and no i dont hold the jockstrap comment against holmes. larry human. and it slipped out at the wrong time. but in some ways i dont blame him. the media was being a dick to larry and everything was "marciano this and marciano that". i dont blame larry for finally having enough and flipping out. also, the marciano family long forgave holmes for his comments.

i am not really a fan of holmes, however im a big ali fan. but i do give holmes credit where it is due. when i studied larry, i could not find many flaws in his career. he was a dominant champion over a long period, had 20 title defenses, never lossed in his prime, proved himself cdlearly the best of his era, beat a great heavyweight and solid depth, proved he could win in the line of adversity, has all around very good skills, size and strength, and did very well when well past his prime in his 40s. the mans a top 5 heavyweight of all time. i just think ali would have defintley outpointed holmes. i studied this matchup and i saw ali winning a clear and competitive 15 unanimous.

Thankyou BoxBuzz. I now have one reply I can judge the tournament on!

Silkov, and BB. I admire both of you for your views and would appreciate it if you could put in your tips for the fights below:

Ali vs Tyson
Louis vs Lewis
Holmes vs Frazier
Foreman vs Marciano

I was hoping to do one-round per week, but I guess I will have to extend that to 2, seeing as I only have one complete reply.

Ali vs Tyson ....Ali wins 15 points decision... or by late stoppage...
Louis vs Lewis ....Louis wins by ko in about 9 rounds...
Holmes vs Frazier... Larry wins on points.... this would be the best fight of the bunch!....
Foreman vs Marciano ...Foreman wins on 3rd round ko...

I'm pretty much in agreement with Silkov, except I think Frazier would win a close decision against Holmes.
Ali TKO 11 over Tyson
Louis KO 9 over Lewis
Foreman KO 4 over Marciano

First round:
Ali vs Tyson: Ali TKO 10 Tyson (Ali absorbs a few bombs in the first four rounds, then proceeds to deliver a beating on Tyson)
Louis vs Lewis: Lewis KO 3 Louis (Louis gets hurt several times and blown away)
Holmes vs Frazier: Holmes W 15 Frazier (very close)
Foreman vs Marciano: Foreman TKO 4 Marciano (similar to the Chuvalo fight)

Second round:
Ali vs. Lewis: Ali TKO 14 Lewis (very boring fight, Ali's better conditioning outlasts the bigger man then turns up the volume to stop him late)
Holmes vs. Foreman: Holmes TKO 8 Foreman (Holmes tries to box, but Foreman makes it a wild brawl. Holmes barely survives to turn the tide on an exhausted Foreman).

Final round:
Ali vs. Holmes: Ali W 15 Holmes (very competitive and tactical fight early on, both fighters would start trading after the first third of the fight was over. Ali was a superior all around fighter and would squeeze by on a close by deserved decision)
