Tarver vs Hopkins.

Post by stujones »

Looks close to be signed..... Who knows with Bernard - but what a way to end a career if he beats Tarver and do you know, I think he will.

Hopkins' might not be a 3 minute round fighter, but neither is Tarver and I think Hopkins will find away (possible with sympathetic judging) to squeek a decision.

It will be at 175 if it happens.

I was speaking to Kurt Ermhoff (manager to a number of top fighters) when the Hopkins vs Toney fight was being negotiated at Cruiserweight. He's seen both up close and tipped Hopkins. I didn't, but I think he'll beat Tarver.

I favour Tarver by a long chalk. Hopkins is all bluster. He's looked good in a division so light in talent as to be positively anorexic.

And all the 'Executioner' hocus is patently absurd. Shouldn't that persona be passed on to someone who actively searches for kayos?

agreed!! tarver wins convincingly due to age AND SIZE...it HAS been awhile since b-hop lived up to his nickname, but not as over stated as "macho" camacho

I'd be very surprised if Hopkins pulled this win off, Tarver's a big man and its not like Bernard was tight at 160 pounds, often he came in under than. At this stage of Hokpins career, jumping up to Light Heavyweight, I would say Tarver will win pretty easy and I dare say a late stoppage would not be out of the question.

If this fight actually happens I'm not sure it will be the most exciting matchup of styles especially at their respective ages. Neither fighter are known for their high workrate these days.

The weight difference must surely be a concern for Hopkins a man who has made the Middleweight limit with ease for years, going in with a big Light-Heavyweight like Tarver.

Will/can Hopkins bulk up a little? Not an easy thing to do at his age. Or will he just weigh-in with a 'heavy' tracksuit on? By fight time we may well be watching a 165lbs fighter fighting a 185lb fighter.

Hopkins is a very intelligent and smart fighter so he obviously sees something in Tarvers fighting style he can take advantage of, so I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Also another thing to consider will the filming of Rocky 6 distract Tarver at all?

awful, just awful. Tarver-Hopkins-Jones - any of these in combination are going to be poor posing matches that somehow convince the fans to waste their money, while there's overlooked fighters who all but guarantee good fights

it's funny, with all the action fights at cruiserweight and the talent packed lighter divisions, that the old posers are being given such a big stage.

A stinker no doubt, and I don't see Hopkins beating a man who will outweight him by 25 lbs on fight night.

I remember Hopkins is said to have put on about 14 or 15 lbs after weighing in for Keith Holmes, in their part unification fight. Benard was massive that night compared to usual, and really bullied Holmed inside. Won't be able to do anything like that to a proper light heavy Tarver (indeed, Keith Holmes had once been, and would be again - a Junior Middle).

I wonder how many punches BH throws over the first six rounds

This will be a hideous fight, surely nobody is going to buy it on PPV? Both throw the minimal amount of punches they can get away with, that spells a snoozefest in anyones book.

distracted by a movie? interesting!!! larry merchant said after lewis got KOd by rahman that lennox had just "drowned in OCEANS 11" the film that lewis was involved with when he should have been concentrating on rahman!!!

IMO, that's the only way b-hop will beat tarver!!!

i dont think so, antonio has a major role & will appear in more than just the fighting scenes...

i just checked imdb.com, which said "ROCKY BALBOA" (official title) began filming 12/3/05 (crowd scenes from hopkins-taylor2), is still in filming status & wont be released til 2007...

I can't wait that long. :o

I'm sure I read somwhere they were finishing up filming - not long ago. Lets be honest its not going to take 12 months to shoot a Rocky movie.

I bet less. I'll take 40. Just think his arms are going to be heavier if he's 15lbs+ heavier it will take more effort for him to let his hands go. Maybe he wont throw anything.

What about this promise to his mum he would retire before turning 41? That seems to have gone out of the window. Win or lose against Tarver if it happens I think he'll go on.

i dont know where you read they had finished filming(?!?) but imdb.com is a very reliable source...

in fact the crowd scenes were done on 12/3 just to catch the hopkins-taylor crowd, i dont think actual filming began until later in december, possibly even early 2006 & while it wont take 12 months to film, by the time they get done with editing, promos, etc. 2007 is not out of the question, altho i would be surprised if it wasnt released in time for the traditional max exposure season of the christmas holidays in 12/06...

Anwar Richardson of the Tampa Tribune is reporting that a June 10th bout between Antonio Tarver and Bernard Hopkins has been contractually agreed to.

Tarver quoted in the Tampa Tribune says, "Bernard is coming off two controversial losses, but we aren't taking him lightly. We're up to the challenge. It will be one of the best fights of the year."

HBO Pay-Per-view will televise.

not quite the crowd you'd want for a rocky film!!! Hardly a blood and buts encounter.

Terence wrote:Looks like Tarver will only get two fights this year at the most and I'd suspect just this one. Does he think he is already a great fighter because he beat one? His work-rate is pretty woeful and altough an engaging figure he has not grasped the nettle of opportunity IMO.

This fight will be dull as hell, might be interesrting though. Is it for a title? Hopkins to win a very messy decision. Then complain that no one loves him. :-?
It is a pointless fight between two over the hill fighters but it's still intriging and I know I'll be watching it. And yeah I'm pretty sure Tarver really believes that he's already a great, probably even an all time great.

rocky 6 should do well in just about any season...but it is more likely to get lost in the shuffle if it comes out during the oversaturated holiday period, so maybe that's why they currently project it as a 2007 release...

either way, the whole point of even mentioning the movie is the possible distraction to tarver & the 6/10 date for this overrated matchup shows making & marketing the film could indeed be a distraction for antonio & that is the ONLY WAY i see him losing to hopkins...if he comes in super flat FROM LACK OF FOCUS!!! he's done it before...
