Favorite Ali Quotes!

Post by Arsenal »

I thought people would like this topic. At least it will be funny. So what are your favorite quotes, statements, rhythms etc. Mine are:

"It's just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. I beat people up".

"He's to ugly to be the World Champion". About Liston.

"No Viet Cong ever call me a person". About the Vietnam draft.

"I saw George Foreman shadow boxing and the shadow won".

"If you dream of beating me you better wake up and apologise." About George Foreman.

But my favorite is:

"Joe Frazier is so ugly that when he cries the tears turn around and go down the back of his head".

However I thought the quote above was slightly different but this is what it said on an Ali website. Is it correct?

How about 'I don't want a person, I want a hamburger', in reply to 'we don't serve niggers'.
Heard this quoted often.

As far as I am aware Ali stole that line off the one and only Joe Louis, the way I heard it was....

One night in the late 1960's Joe Louis and Billy Conn we having a meal together in a restuarant. Ali walks in and spots the old Brown Bomber and walks over and starts trying to wind Joe up with talk like "Oh Joe you got a real break I wasn't around in your day" "I'm too fast for you Joe" etc etc.

Joe just looked at him with that old stoneface of his and said "Listen boy, if you even dream you could have beaten me, you better wake up and apologise".

Ali looked a little shocked, then burst out laughing and said "You two guys are crazy, I'm outta here!!!"

Yeah your right. Them stories that you don't hear alot are so much better.

Obviously Ali is more famous for saying because of how loud he said it! Well I just like the way he said it.

Ali was goin on and on to Joe Louis about how he could whup Joe etc. Joe told him "when I was champ I went on something called the bum of the month tour". Ali said "Are you callin me a bum Joe". Louis said " You woulda been on the tour".

In the interview before the Archie Moore fight, Ali recited a poem. The final lines were something like:

I'm gonna sweep that old man right oughta the ring
Cos a nice new broom can sweep up any old thing

Another classic one is during his enforced "layoff" when he is talking to D'Amata. Cus mimics Frazier's style and throws a left hook. Ali immediately stops him and says "whoa, slower, slower. Joe don't throw his as fast as that!"

Didn't this quote make it into a move? I think it was Resourver Dogs?

I didn't know it was Louis who originally said this, then Ali used it.

Here are a couple more.

Howard Cosell: "You are being very truculent."
Ali- "I don't know what truculent means, but if it's good, then I'm that.

"Joe Frazier is the greatest fighter of alltime....... next to me."
