It's amazing that he didn't fight Hilmer Kenty, who was a lightweight in 1976.

I find it hard to believe that The hit man only had 11 ko's in 155 wins.

Are ya sure it's not 111 ko's?

only 11 KOs

Post by Venceremos »

Confirmed, only 11 KOs...

Tommy Hearns wasn't "the hitman" at amateur level.

Hearns was very much a Boxer type as an amateur and not the feasome puncher he became as a professional.

It is 11 KO's. He fought George Gilbody here and I also have a tape of him getting pummeled by Aaron Pryor.

As an amatuer Hearns wasnt much of a puncher

As an amateur, Hearns won 147 of 155 fights and took the AAU national and Golden Gloves 147-pound championships in 1977. The 6-foot-1 Hearns had only 11 knockouts in his amateur career but, after turning professional in November of 1977, he became known as the "Hit Man" because of his new-found punching ability.

Tommy Hearns amatuer

Post by Ken »

I know he beat Bruce Williams of Philly around 1975 in amatuers.
Did see a film of Aaron Pryor beating him. Pryor who fought Howard Davis some 7x as an amatuer got robbed in the trials against Davis.

I meet Hearns in 75

Post by The Kid »

I wanted to add a few notes on The Hitman.

I fought him in the 75 National GG in Knoxville Civic Coliseum in Tennesse.

I lost a decison to him. :box:

He beat a kid named Wardell Williams of Kansas City prior to boxing
me.

I meet a kid from Low, Mass. named Mark Garrow.

I represented the Westcost Regionals since I won the Regionals in Las Vegas.

I am not sure who Hearns boxed after me since I went back to San
Diego.

I can say that he was the only guy I fought who was taller than me. I
was kinda tall for 118, standing 5'9.

Hearns did not have the style or punch that he later took on as a pro.
He was a runner and used his jab, almost in a open hand style. No power, but enought to keep you at a distance and gain points.
I did pressure him but he knew how to avoid getting caught on the ropes and kept the action in the middle of the ring. The Joe Frazier style was not my style since I was a boxer, hit and move type of boxer, but against
Hearns, I had to turn to a Joe Frazier style. Aside from a few exchanged jabs, a couple of jabs to the mid-sections and one overhand right that landed, it was just me chasing him and him flicking his left jab out and gaining points.

The person who was really bad back then at that weight was
Miguel Ayala who fought out of Ft Worth, TX. :TU:

Rudy
Miguel Ayala = Mike Ayala (Tony's older brother) is/fought out of San Antonio. He also has a younger brother named Paulie who many confuse with Ft. Worth's Paulie Ayala. No relation.

Dates

Post by The Kid »

Mr Ramos,

Let me add some dates that I have.

I fought Mark Garrow and Hearns on March 26th 1975.

Hearns fought Williams (and won dec.) and then fought me on March 26th 1975

Back then we had to fight many times at different tournament twice

in one day. That is not allowed any longer.

Also Mike Ayala did fight out of San Antonio but since he was representing the Regional that he had won, he was out of Ft. Worth, TX
when he fought in Tennesse. I was from San Diego but represented Las Vegas Regionals.

I found my notes -- in late 1976 Hearns and 4 other USA boxers particpated in the President's Cup Tournament in Jakarta Indonesia. 14 National teams participated.

Hearns's tournament record:
W Ko -- Suranat Hardas, Malasia
W KO -- Opponet, Japan
W Ko --Opponent, Egypt
Loss (3-2) Syamsul Anwar, Indnesia -- Finals
