Jose Luis Castillo-Stevie Johnston : how did those 2 fights went?
Does any films of Sugar Ray Robinson against Kid Gavilan exists?
Some questions about a few fights that I didn't see......
Re: Some questions about a few fights that I didn't see.....
Bonavena- one of the STUPIDEST heavyweights in history in making a battle plan- decided to back up against Frazier(a man whom he was stronger than) and try to counter off the ropes, thus nullifying his own power. Frazier battered him at will in the first three-quarters of the bout, but tireless Oscar turned it on towards the end, trading wallops with the tiring champion as he himself grew stronger. Frazier had a badly swollen jaw after the bout. Oscar was swollen and cut. In a 30 round fight he KOs Frazier.jedijojo wrote:Frazier-Bonavena II : In the first Bonavena gave Frazier lots of troubles, how did this fight went?

I was a McCallum fan. The first could have gone either way. The second was Toney's fight.
Frazier looked to me to be beating Ellis the whole time.
Frazier-Bonavena II : In the first Bonavena gave Frazier lots of troubles, how did this fight went?
Bonavena didnt choose to go to the ropes Frazier who was damn near his prime forced him into the ropes, kept him there and beat him like a drum. It was a much easier fight for Frazier than the first time. Fraziers left hook had the right side of Bonavenas face bruised, bloody, and swollen. Bonavena didnt come on late in the fight as nero suggests. The pace was fairly even throughout in the sense that it built up momentum but Frazier, after a slow first or second round, maintained a sizable lead. Bonavena made it interesting and was competetive but Frazier was too strong and hit too hard and had too much stamina.
Frazier-Mathis : I read that it was competitive for a while until Joe turned the heat on.
I didnt think it was as one sided for mathis as most over the early rounds but I admit Mathis was doing very well and could move well for a big man. Seeing how frazier wore down most of his opponents its a typical frazier fight with the larger mathis lasting longer than most because he was able to stay out of harms way a little longer.
Toney-Mccallum I and II : I heard they were both controversials decisions. How did it went?
Havent watched either in a long time but I remember both were close. Toney flipped out after the first bout and tried to attack McCallums lawyer at the press conference.
Duran-Dejesus III : I know that Duran won by tko in the 12th, I know nothing about this fight.
Duran fought pretty much the perfect fight and had his easiest time with Dejesus. He knocked Dejesus out with a punch that looked kind of like a karate chop with boxing gloves. Beautiful KO.
Frazier-Ellis : Did the fight went like that: Ellis won the first 2 rounds by outboxing Frazier and then in the 3rd BOUM huge left hook that hurt Ellis and in the fourth Frazier almost kills Ellis?
Ellis basically did the same as mathis but because he was smaller, weaker, and less durable he couldnt last as long. He tried to box and keep his distance but when Frazier started putting that heat on him it was over quick.
Jose Luis Castillo-Stevie Johnston : how did those 2 fights went?
Both fights were razor thin. One was so close that the decision was reversed after the broadcast was over because of a slight screw up in adding up the cards.
Does any films of Sugar Ray Robinson against Kid Gavilan exists?
No footage exists of these bouts. It is rumored that footage exists in Cuba but it has never been verified.

Actually, it is a verifiable fact that Bonavena's strategy was to fight off the ropes and make Frazier punch himself out. Oscar was bigger and much stronger than Frazier and boxing scribes were incredulous that he didn't attempt to assert his superior strength and back Joe up. It was almost as silly as strategy as attempting to counterpunch the slicker, faster Jimmy Ellis.

....there was a period when jimmy young was at his best against those big wide swinging sluggers. everyone thought foreman was going to murder him but i had my doubts and said i'd be able to pick the winner in the first minute of the first round. Foreman came out bouncing on his feet instead of sliding and i said young was going to win....foreman's stamina would give out. which it did. after the fight he said he was so tired he saw god...who, apparently told him to take a decade away from the ring.
one of foreman's problems was he sometimes hit too hard. jimmy young said he thought foreman had taken his head off with a shot....but the blow was so powerful that it knocked young halfway across the ring, and by the time foreman got to him jimmy was able to use all of his considerable cleverness to last out the round....and he won a clear decision....even scored a knockdown....the exhausted foreman went down much as he did against ali....fatigue moreso than the power of young's punch...jimmy was definitely not a hard hitter....but boy was he a cutie when he was good.
