Media likes to piss on woes of retired boxers.

Post by c.millss »

Pernell Whittaker praised as an enigma with his awkward defence seems to be thrown to the dogs as a highlight in mass sports media topics which love to dramatize the mans personal drug afflictions rather than reflect on his brilliance in the ring. Tell me if I am wrong, when is the last time one of these pretentious glory hounds mention Sweet Pea's unorthodox ring mastery and his years of blood and sweat in the gym mastering technique rather than write up his latest police report. There is a problem in sports writing that seems to be oblivious of the sweet science. I as well as many posters(much who are prize fighters) on these forums recognize the incredible will it takes to be a contender in the sport of boxing. Throw out the critique that superior athletes are inclined to partake in b-ball or football because of c-notes. No, prize fighters are a different class of athlete; a dying breed of sportsman who better themselves through extreme ability to absorb punishment with retainment of endurance and well conditioned lungs. Forget Jonnie Tapia, Miguel Angel Gonzales, and Antonio Tarver were champs. Let's let sportscenter remind us they were drug addicts. Bullshit media.

I agree. They forget to mention the fact, that even though they had problems with substance abuse, they were great in the ring. The media usually likes stories about how people fornicate up rather than about good people or positive things. This is especially true for boxing. Look at what the media did to Mike Tyson. They make him look like an idiot, and he may very well be an idiot, but he was a damned good fighter. Then again when do you hear anything from the general media that's positive about boxing?
