..... but doesn't drop a word about Kessler (or Beyer for that matter).

Instead lots of words on RJJ and Manfredo.

This is exactly why Joe Calzaghe is one silly kunt. The man deserves all the abuse he has taken. The Lacy performance was quality, but it was the exception in Calzaghe's spluttering career.

Why the fook is Calzaghe even talking about Manfredo? The lad may have beaten Pemberton, but Pemberton had already been smashed to fook by Lacy. It is literally proving nothing.

Calzaghe should be using the Lacy victory to spring-board himself into superfights. Instead Calzaghe obviously considers that the Lacy fight has given him some breathing space to kick back and resume fighting nobodies (something he has done for a large portion of his reign as WBO champ).

To be fair, the article only has a few quotes from Joe and in terms of references to RJJ they were infering that the fight won't happen, thank God. Yep there was a quote on Manfredo, who is one of several fighters they are looking at.

Glad he has more or less ruled out RJJ - I think it would be a no win fight as he says, he'd be slagged off whatever the result.

Still - you could argue that the complete absence of any mention of Kessler in ANY quotations from Calzaghe amounts to a pattern.

Calzaghe is just not looking that way. Reasons can be debated, but his lack of interest in facing Kessler is pretty obvious.

What I find particulalry irritating is that he states he wants "obviously to fight an American" because he's seen as a European champ who hasn't fought good Americans. Bullocks: except for fellow Brits Reid, Starie, Eubank, Woodhall, ALL half-decent fighters he's taken on were US Americans - Brewer, Mitchell, Lacy, Sheika. However, he has NOT fought the leading Europeans and Aussies - Ottke, Beyer, Green, Mundine, Larsen, and now Kessler. And Europeans and Aussies have been calling most of the shots at 168 in recent years.

Over 1 mill to fight a relatively easy challenge in Manfredo, thats smart, not silly. :TU:

From Frank's mailbag at his site allegedlyfrank.tv

" Thanks for your comments regarding Joe. We are finalising the undercard of Williams/Skelton and will announce in due course when Amir will fight.
Kessler is a nice guy, in fact his mother is English. It would be a great fight to make in the future, his promoter has told us that Kessler will be available in the Autumn. If we can agree terms it is a natural fight to make. Thank you for your support."

But it isnt smart for his credibility :TU: And so the next time his dad moans that his son doesnt get the credit he deserves, will you please tell him to shut up and go comfort himself with his son's bank balance. Proper fans dont give a shit how much easy money he's making, a fighter's legacy is built on him taking on proper recognised dangerous fighters - like Jeff Lacy.

Prior to the Lacy fight, Calzaghe was basically ridiculed by most fight fans in the UK. His legacy was gonna be a joke. But the fight with Lacy has sprung Calzaghe's popularity and he has a real opportuinty to kick-on and make a name for himself in the mould of Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank. Instead it looks like he's gonna spunk that opportunity away.

Money comes and goes, but Calzaghe will be stuck with his legacy for the rest of his life. Of course its smart for the fighter to make easy money, but then dont expect the public to accept or appreciate you as a proper warrior.

Kessler would be in for an almighty beating as well. :TU:

What he did with Lucas when steping in and out to jab at him would play into Joe's trap.

He only mentioned RJJ because he doesn't want to fight him Pundit and Manfredo isn't a definate.

If anyone is to believe that - then why are Kessler people VERY keen on making it happen, while Calzaghe people are VERY keen to explain why it can not happen?

Google doesn't translate Danish for me.

There was a british boxing.net article about Warren trying to make a deal with team palle ages ago before the Lacy fight wasn't there.

Yeah this one.

good article in the boxing news about the kessler fight.

both sides were criticising the other. it seems like kessler's team are talking telephone numbers and warren ain't interested until they drop there ridiculous demands.

a july fight looks out of the question anyhow.

Everyone wants to fight Calzaghe. The problem is that they want to fight him in the Fall. The mistake was to commit himself so strongly to the July 8 date, but Warren was talking that up from the final bell against Lacy. So I think Showtime must have pushed that date.

When you think about acceptable opponents for the July 8 date. The list is rather small, particularly when Beyer declined. I just don't see a really good option.

I'll say that Calzaghe can meet:

Kessler - the ONLY rival at 168. Any other 168er would be laughable - even Beyer, becauase everyone knows Joe would win that one rather easily.

Tarver - For the money and "some" recognition.

RJJ - Purely for the money - no recognition.

___________

That is about it. If Calzaghe fights someone else he will always be critisized and he should be. Joe has to realize that he is the one with the chance to make a legacy for himself. If he keeps thinking "They need me more than I need them - like he has for the last many many years, then none (or at least most..) of the great fights are never going to happen. The younger people may have time to build their carreers later, but for Joe it is about getting those defining fights now - and by being very ridgid - he will not get them and basically will have wasted the opportunity to make the most of it.

With Kessler and his management calling Calzaghe out during the entire of Calzaghe's carreer - and calzaghe avoiding him.... it will of course always be a tremendous stain on Calzaghe's carreer - and if Kessler goes undefeated for the next 6 years and then retires, many people will know why Joe did not want the fight.

The article is in the newest number of Boxing news and that there is just a translation to Danish. I think you have to subscribe to Boxing News in order to get the original article.

Basically the article catches Warren in lying and after the interview it is clear that he just does not want the fight. First he tries all kinds of excuses - like saying "telephone numbers" then when there are facts saying that Palle has offered Kessler in Copenhagen with a huge sum of money to Calzaghe plus all the British TV rights, or Kessler comes to the UK.. then Warren moves on with a few more excuses before it is clear that he just doesn't want the fight and he has no real reason.. other than Kessler being too strong. In the end Warren says "ok, we could make it happen, but then Palle has to be reasonable".

Doesn't sound like it will happen. Too bad for us boxingfans.

well, let's see what happens before pissing on the man. he did what he was supposed to do last march, now everyone's saying 'if he doesn't do what I want him to do he can't be one of my toy soldier heroes', which is frankly pathetic and immature.

let's say the manfredo fight happens. what does that show you? they're going to want to keep fightig american opponents. jones (too shot) and tarver (too "unattractive", they say) aren't target fights. who are? Taylor and Winky. sounds good to me

Thats bollocks. Prior to the Lacy fight Calzaghe had turned himself into a joke. After his last performance he has put peoples' faith back in him. If he's gonna go back to fighting stiffs or has-beens, its neither pathetic nor immature to criticise the man.

But youre right, lets wait and see. The only problem is that you cant blame people for fearing the worse as Calzaghe has a long track record of facing shit opponents.

sure, he did turn himself into a bit of a joke for 3 years between the mitchell and lacy fights. however, just cos he might fight manfredo next doesn't mean we should close the door on his whole career

you know, you ought to look at the post Naz Barrera - fighting shot versions of Kelley and Tapia, and the post Tito Hopkins - his next big fight would be 2 years and that would be a Joppy already beaten by Tito

it's terrible when we get interested in a fighter only for the fights we want to see not materialize. shit, that made me give up on boxing for at least two years as MAB and Bh were my fave fighters

I'm not so keen on Calzaghe and Warren's 'let's take it to the yanks' attitude. seems naive when there's a homegrown superfight (Woods) and two unifications with top class Euros - Kessler and Beyer - are there.

but if winky or taylor, or even hopkins/tarver, are delivered, we can't complain can we? and they can't be delivered in July 8, because they fight in June. for that matter, isn't just about every fighter someone wants him to fight, already fighting in the next 2-3 months? i think that applies to beyer, kessler, mundine, green

kessler looks like he can be a great fighter. but it seems 1/2 of the criticisms of Calzaghe-Manfredo on here are cos Kessler is being proclaimed the heir apparent. Kessler looks like a reliable choice to have a long championship reign, as he has the poised, steady look of a real champion. but it's damn dangerous proclaiming an heir apparent. most of them never are - think of Mike Dokes, Vitali Klitschko - even Jermain Taylor has plenty of work to do

save the bile for his rubber match vs Veit!

Already the pendulum begins to swing back against Calzaghe :-?

Boxing can be very cruel, as great as a showing he gave last time out he needs to build upon it not rest upon it.

Nine years it took to recieve such praise...he does not have another 9yrs to give us another one.

Kessler is the only name he needs, two great performances back2back will guarantee his place in the history books...one will be forgotten all too soon

The idea that Calzaghe can "only" fight Tarver or Kessler next is beyond stupid. First, Tarver's fighting Hopkins so I don't think he'll be ready for July 8. Second, if you limit your options to two fighters, they will be able to hold you over the barrell in negotiations.[/quote]

He can obviously fight whoever he want just like he has been doing for the majority of his carrer.

The "problem" is that Joe now is in a position where he can pretty much secure a place as THE HITHERTO BEST SUPERMIDDLE WEIGHT EVER, and manfredo etc. will not secure that. Some will say it could be Ottke, others that RJJ would have whipped Joe (some (like me) will claim than Roy was not in smw long enough to be considered a smw) and so on. Everyone knows that Calzaghe has a VERY notorious record of NOT making fights happen. If you are young or you are set for a good carreer that may be ok, but if you have the chance to be a legend then that is just not good enough.

Joe not making the fight with Kessler happen will forever haunt Joe's legacy because Kessler is clearly the only treat to Calzaghe - and he has been so for many years (I never believed in the Lacy hype and earned a good deal of money on the fight).

The strange thing is that while I think Kessler is now one of the 5 most skilled fighters in boxing..... I think Joe has 50% or more chance of winning their fight, because Joe to me is also easily top 5 p4p. But Joe has always been far too risk adverse for his own good.

i wouldn't be surprised if kessler went on to have one hell of a career. a great jab can take a fighter a long way. but there have been more tragic fights that never happened - Azumah-Brian Mitchell, Pedroza-Salvador Sanchez. Probem is, there aren't too many ppl calling for Calzaghe-Lacy.

if Calzaghe beat Kessler, same thing that happened post Lacy will happen. Lacy (powerful, intimidating, good stamina, very dangerous, improving) became the "slowest of the s/m champs". Kessler (outstanding jab, composed, top quality outside fighter) would probably become "flawed vs southpaws, no KO punch, can't fight inside". if it was Beyer - skilled, fast - it would be "the most vulnerable" if JC beat him

we know better after, don't we? well, let's improve our powers of precognition!

Calzaghe's had a very good career, and for all we know might have a couple more very good wins. It doesn't really matter if he was the best ever s/m or not. Look at my post further up from a couple of days ago - Warren does say that's it's not out of the question - but they obviously want to fight a top American.

Cruel my arse! I'm a huge fan of Calzaghe's talents but hated the fact that he spent his career avoiding the best fighters. He momentarily put all the criticism behind him when he dismantled Lacy. Almost everyone was prepared to 'forgive & forget' about his previous oponents in the hope that he will now fight only the very best out there!

Fcuking Peter Manfredo!!! He deserves all the criticism he gets for even mentioning him as a possible oponent.

Cant say i'm surprised though
