Heavyweight Howard Smith

Post by KOJOE90 »

I have only ever seen Howard Smith fight once and that was when he got crushed by Earnie Shavers.

Anyone here seen any of his other fights?

On the Shavers Greatest Puncher Ever video it was claimed that Smiths neck was damaged during their fight and he never fought again. According to our database this is not true as he had one more winning fight. Anyone no anymore about this?

I saw Howard Smith, a black heavyweight, fight on Olympic
Auditorium telecasts during the 1970s. He was capable, but
had a very dull style. At one point in his career, he had to
supplement his income by working as a forklift operator,
but I think he later hooked up with Ken Norton's management
team. Of course, you were taking a big risk in your career
if you fought Earnie Shavers, the hardest puncher I have
ever seen, bar none.

He was around 6'1 and weighed about 200. On film he looks like he could've bulked up a little bit, he was sorta on the skinny side. He could punch and was, as Chuck said, a capable boxer but not really special in any department.

I think his chin wasn't too great; getting knocked down in the 1st by light-hitting Henry Clark (and the ref had a seizure right afterwards, halting the bout and saving Smith from further trouble) hints that his whiskers wern't like granite.

Don't know anything about his neck.
