Louis wore 6 ounce gloves. I believe 8 ounce gloves became the norm in the late 50s but I'm not positive on that one.

The early gloved fighters wore 4 ounce gloves! :o Those are simply little mitts.

Liston wore 8 ounce gloves when he won the title.

In March of 1948 the National Boxing Association adopted their 21-Point Saftey Code, in which one of the new rules stated that all professional boxing matches under their banner must be fought with the use of a minimum of eight ounce gloves. Some other new rules they came up with were the mandatory eight count, mandatory suspension to fighters who were knocked out in their previous fight, and things like that.

The new rules that the NBA implemented were very soon picked up by large athletic commisions such as in New York, California, etc (some state commisions insisted on ten ounce gloves as a minimum).

All the changes came as a direct result of the tragic Sugar Ray Robinson/Jimmy Doyle bout.
