Need information on KO Bill Brennan

Post by klompton »

Hi guys Im trying to track a story on KO Bill Brennan. I cant find the article but I believe it came from an old magazine. Bill Brennan was always billed as being from Ireland (or the champion of Ireland) Anyway it stated that Bill Brennan's identity was created by Leo P. Flynn (or whatever manager he had when he turned pro). His persona was created to bring in the irish fans. The article I read stated that he was actually a country boy of german extraction from Kentucky. Boxrec has his name listed as Wilhelm Schenck and his hometown as Louisville. However his obituary lists his name as William J. Brennan. Anyone have a good biographical sketch of Brennan that sheds light on his early life/career, etc to clear this up.

Fighters are often known by the name they fought under in new paper obituaries. In the early half of the 20th century it was considered fancy to have “ J “ as your middle initial as a fighter. Lots of J’s were early champions John L. Sullivan, James Corbett, James J. Jeffires, Jack Johnson ect...

Jimmy Braddock was James J. Braddock, but that wasn’t his real name, and his middle initial was not “ J “.

My point is William “ J “ Brennan sounds like a name for boxing, while Wilhelm Schenck does not. I can not say for certain what his real name is, but I can see reason to suspect it was Wihelm Schneck.
