Wilfredo Gomez vs Erik Morales. What If?

Post by KOJOE90 »

Who wins? Mexico vs Puerto Rico allways brings out the best in respective camps.

At Super-Bantamwight and if a rematch is required they meet again at Featherweight.

Erik Morales.

Really good fight. I'd go with Gomez to stop Morales in the later rounds. Both were/are solid all-around fighters, but Gomez was a bit better in every category except maybe chin.

I'd favour Gomez at 122 but at 126 I think Morales might be too strong for Gomez... Gomez was really a Bantam in his prime and so Morales would have a size advantage.... p4p though Gomez is the better all round fighter in his prime...

A hell of a match up, i'd favour Gomez in a very competitive fight. It's too hard to say if it'd go the distance or not as Morales had an iron chin at those weights while Gomez is p4p one of the hardest hitters of all time. Morales does have a chance if he stays on the outside, but his pride would make him brawl and I believe Gomez would get the best of him. It'd be a lot like Morales vs Barrera I in my opinion. I did have Morales winning that fight, but I think Gomez would have outworked and landed the harder shots in a very competitive fight.

I struggled with this one and have come up with my take after much soul searching. Both in their prime, I see this going down a bit like the first Pacqio fight but at a faster pace. I think Morales wins a squeaker in a brutal test of wills.

It was not my first take, as I tend to have "gut sentiment" for the older fighters. I think size is going to be a determining factor and Morales has the edge. I think just as Wilfredo couldnt step up to Sanchez or Nelson he would also come up just short to this modern day great.

I gotta go with Gomez at super-bantam. When he was in his prime and against Carlos Zarate at that weight he was a fighter who could do it all. Its real hard to pick against him. At feather it would be more competitive. Morales is naturaly bigger. Id still go with Gomez though. He was really something there for a while.

Wow , the thought of Gomez as an older fighter is damn unsettleing. Doesnt seem like that long ago that he was on the tube on sat. afternoons.

A great Mexico v Puerto Rico match up this one.

At Super Bantam I would favour Gomez to utilise his excellent power and slick combinations to wear down and beat up Morales in a war. Morales doesn't have as good movement or power as Gomez IMO, and I think these would swing the contest in Wilfredo's favour.

Two of my all time favourite fighters - what a fight it would be!
