STOUGHTON -- Peter McNeeley had once been a likeable but unlikely contender, a bruising but little-known boxer who landed a 1995 bout with heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, one of the most feared fighters ever to enter the ring.

McNeeley lost that Las Vegas fight in 89 punishing seconds of fame, but tougher bouts against drugs and alcohol lay ahead. In his latest knockdown, McNeeley found himself in handcuffs yesterday on a Route 128 overpass in Canton, arrested as the alleged getaway driver in a Stoughton drug store robbery that netted less than $200 and a black fanny pack.

A 1991 Buick LeSabre was used in the getaway attempt, authorities said, a beaten-up car owned by a boxer who once parlayed his brief notoriety into a Pizza Hut television commercial. McNeeley stood silent while the charges were read, his head lowered, and his black shirt inside-out as he listened to his court-appointed lawyer, Michael DelSignore.

Its a sad story and a testament to the potentially life ruining affects of coke.

McNeeley is a mess these days I hear.
