"Corky" Gonzales

Post by ferroz »

RUDOLPHO “CORKY” GONZALES

A bit of Colorado boxing history plus much more. Corky Gonzales as he was known in the boxing world plus through out the Nation not just for his boxing skills but for his fight for the Mexican American movement in the 1960’s as it was known the Chicano Movement. Chicano was the word known to Mexicans as meaning the poorest of the poor. In those years 1/3 of Latinos lived in poverty in the USA. Through the work and leadership of Corky Gonzales in 1964 President Johnson came under pressure from the Latino community for Civil rights. In 1966 Corky started the “Crusade For Justice” for the Chicano Enterprise on Civil Rights. In 1967 there was only four Mexican Americans in Congress the same year that Corky made a Poem called “I AM JOAQUIN” a very strong Poem that called the Latinos to a positive motion. Corky was a driving force for the Chicano. Corky made things happen in Denver and gained National attention for Chicanos. Dr. King invited Corky Gonzales to help in a March for the poor and poverty, as Corky was one of the Leaders for the Southwest United States. Corky brought national attention to the U.S. Attorney General for setting a blind eye to discrimination in Housing for Latinos. Corky became known as a leader in the National Level and was a very good leader and organizer. In 1969 in Denver Corky organized a National Youth Liberation movement. This movement had J. Edgar Hoover, the Director of the FBI in those years, trying to down play this movement and saying that it wasn’t going to be big but it turned out bigger than the FBI wanted.
All this showed the United States Government that Chicanos were in their ancestor’s land and not outsiders of this country after all Chicanos roots were of Mexican decent and were here before the United declared war in 1846 on Mexico and overnight the Mexicans were considered Foreigners.
Now boxing History Corky Gonzales of Denver, Colorado was a top World Featherweight Boxer and was ranked number three in the World in his prime. 60-10-1
