Murray Worner's All-Time Championship. SEMI FINALS.

Post by Crease »

In 1967, a Miami promoter, Murray Woroner wanted to simulate a tournament (by means of a supercomputer). This tournment would have the greatest boxers in history, fighting for the All-Time World Heavyweight Championship.

He reasoned that it would be a straight knock-out tournament and that it would contain 16 of the greatest boxers throughout time. Worner called upon the services of 2 boxing experts to assidt him,
Nat Fleischer (Editor of The Ring Magazine) +
Hank Kaplan (President of the World Boxing Historian's Organisation).

After a week's worth of discussions, they narrowed the field down to the last 16 great boxers.

The Supercomputer took 18 months to build and develop and it was fed with extensive video footage, records and information of the 16 boxers. Once it was developed it choose the First Round of Fights At Random...

NOW.

I'm going to ask you, my esteemed friends (BOXREC MEMBERS) to re-play the tournment and see who wins.

The rules are:

1. NO mocking other peoples opinions, (opinions can't be wrong).
2. You may only cast your prediction once, (there will be no changing minds).
3. You'll have 10 days to post your opinions.
4. The boxer with the most votes will progress.
5. When you post, you must post your opinions on EVERY FIGHT.
6. Fights consist of 15 ROUNDS, (3 minutes long).
7. The rounds are as follow: 1st Round, Quarter Finals, Semi Finals, 3rd Place Showdown, THE FINAL.

THE QUARTER FINALS ARE OVER, four great Heavyweights have been eliminated, but the last four have survived the onslaught and proudly march into the next challange!!!

THE SEMI FINALS ARE HERE!!!

Please post your views and good luck to all the Fighters!!!

So here's the my views for the Semi Finals...

1. Jack Dempsey vs Joe Louis

I don't think Louis would be able to KO a prime Dempsey BUT I also don't think that Dempsey would be able to catch Louis repeatedly. I do think that Dempsey will floor him but Louis' technique might be enough for him tos eal the victory... I would say, LOUIS wins on points decision.

2. Jack Johnson vs Muhammad Ali

Johnson would try to grind Ali down, but I don't think he would floor Ali. I personally believe Ali would be too flight-footed for Johnson to dominate so I say.... Ali wins by referre stoppage, round 13.

Louis UD Dempsey (Louis is knocked down at least once, but gets up to win a clear points decision).

Ali TKO13 Johnson (Ali well ahead on points starts to break Johnson apart in the later round before the ref steps in and stops the fight).

1. Jack Dempsey vs. Joe Louis. DOUBLE KNOCKOUT

2. Jack Johnson vs. Muhammad Ali.

(a) With Ali's muslims visiting Johnson the week before the fight---JOHNSON QUITS IN HIS CORNER WITH A SORE SHOULDER.

(b) with an unbiased referee and no muslim visits to Johnson----ALI DISQUALIFIED FOR HOLDING

Dempsey fought at full speed for 15 rounds against Tommy Gibbons.

The film is easily available.

Dempsey knocked out Bill Brennan in the 12th round of a hard fought fight.

The film is easily available.

I kinda lost interest when Sullivan was picked to beat Braddock, which was just ludicrous. As for the remainder:

Louis never fought a fighter as deadly AND fast as Jack Dempsey. If Dempsey puts him down the way Galento did, and is allowed to circle round behind, it will be lights out for Louis. On the other hand, Dempsey in his prime was outboxed by Bill Brennan before he managed to knockout Bill in the 12th round. Louis was relentless and a better all-round fighter than Brennan. I could see Joe using his jab and busting Dempsey up over a distance, maybe scoring a technical knockout in a later round, or even putting him down for the count. This is a pick-em, but I'll go with Louis as he had more tools than Dempsey.

Ali vs. Johnson. Johnson didn't like to attack, and Ali wasn't always very agressive either. They both liked to wait for openings when they were up against top fighters. This could be a real snore-fest for 15 rounds. Both had good jabs, with Ali's being slightly better. Ali was faster on his feet. Both had excellent chins, though both could get careless. This one would definitely go the distance, and I'd see Ali come out on top.

Dempsey vs. Louis: Louis KO2

(just look at Louis-Schmeling II or Louis-Baer if you wanna know what would be likley to happen. Or picture Louis instead of Firpo in the ring with Dempsey)

Johnson vs. Ali: Ali lopsided UD 15

(Johnson was a defensive fighter who tired his opponents out. This wouldn't work with Ali)

My real problem will be how to vote in the final, the 1938 Louis vs. the 1965 Ali. Unreal.
