Max Baer VS Leon Spinks

Max and Leon had an "in common occurrence" ....in their post championship years they both tasted defeat at the hands of a fighter making their Pro Debut. Much has been made of this issue regarding Max as if it somehow defined him. I'm not buying that myself but it may make this matchup less than laughable for some. Art Oliver did the dirty deed to Max, and our own contributor (Johnny Bombs) John Carlo applied the same pain to Leon albeit in a bit more dramatic style.

Trainers in this case..... Emanuel Steward vs Mike Cantwell

I would say Baer and I would base it largely on Spinks' fight with Gerrie Coetzee.
He had some problems with guys with big right hands.

Spinks lost to Coetzee, but maybe Gerrie was better than Baer. Baer was more like Bernardo Mercado, talent-wise, and look what Spinks did to him. (Geez. I felt sorry for ol' Leon in this poll)

Georgie Benton trained 7-fight novice Leon Spinks to beat Ali.

Benton walked out of the corner and the arena after 6 rounds of the second fight, saying later that was because it was not on the level.

Leon Spinks was a Philadelphia fighter.

Where do you get this Emanuel Steward as his trainer?

Steward was at the end of Spinks career correct? Boxrec has Steward listed and I ran with it. Steward was there for part of his career I believe, is that portion in dispute?

Baer KO's Spinks easy if Leon couldn't beat the oposition he had no way he could stop Max Baer

Baer KO within 3

Both were inconsistent, shaky fighters so any prediction is bound to be shaky as well. The Leon Spinks that beat Ali could have given Baer trouble, but only if Baer would have come in as lacklustre and ill-prepared as against Braddock. That said, Baer was far more talented and should have beaten LSpinks 3 out of 4 times. A focused Baer is way too much for LSpinks.

Cmon I coaxed Johnny out of the Current scene for historical comment ....Decagon I though you would see the artistry in this theoretical...... and Jaclem....I ask that you just enjoy the eclectic aspect of this contribution.

In the wake of Leon's birthday I thought it appropriate.

Oh and our adopted "broken clock" Headbasher was able to demonstrate his spot on insight and quality assessing capabilities.
