Collectors get your Pedro Lovell action figure this Oct.!

Post by joe kurtz »

Yep, this nearly forgotten '70s heavyweight will be forever immortalized this October when the Jakks Pacific toy manufacturer ( which makes all the current WWE action figures ) releases their first wave of ROCKY action figures to coinside with the 30th anniversary of that film & the release of ROCKY BALBOA to theaters in December.
For those who might not know it, Pedro Lovell portrayed the fighter "Spider Rico" that Rocky battled in the opening moments of the original 1976 film. And it's "Spider Rico" that's a part of the 11 figure set coming out this fall.
I've seen photos of the figure over at http://www.ringsidecollectibles.com & the likeness to Lovell is striking IMO. Hopefully he got a little taste of $$$ for them using his likeness & he hadn't signed all those rights away back in '76.
Lovell was originally from Argentina & his biggest fights came in the form of a draw with the undefeated future title contender Leroy Jones & a 5th round KO loss to Ken Norton. Both of which were nationally televised fights.

Pedro Lovell fought on telecasts of boxing cards staged at
the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles during the 1970s.
To be frank, he was being matched up with stiffs at the
time. One thing that I remember is that he did gain notice
for his singing ability.
