It is a bit of a shocker isn't it?
He's was the kind of bloke everyone likes, hard to have anything against him really.
Good to see someone who lived for their work, but not in a self-obsessed way like many entertainers and sportsmen.

Always found him as irritating as sawdust underpants. Listening to that whining fecker going on about snakes and generally harrassing the local wildlife in order to make a living.

Apparently the silly sod took his one month old son into a crocodile pen holding him under his arm whilst feeding a hunk of meat to the crocodile.

Well done the stingrays, nature fought back it would seem. :TU:

Only kidding, he was bloody irritating though.

Always reminded me of Jeff Fenech in the way they both speak.

Found him entertaining and very knowledgable.

Timing James

Funny, daring, lived life to the fullest and had big balls. Loved by everyone except James Mcdonnell. Can't say I watched his show much but hes the sort of bloke you find it hard to believe hes dead because he really had so much life in him

Can't help but think that this was an accident waiting to happen. The needless and unnecessary teasing and taunting of dangerous animals was probably going to lead to something like this.

Just got this post off a football forum. Made me crack up laughing.

"Mowst peeuple think the steeng rie is daynegerous. Thatt's jarst styoopd. The steeng rie has a hoily developed soshul sense. Let's see how Oi get orn with this byooty..."

C'mon James he's just passed on ffs, he had a genuine love for nature. He would of prob got on well with you since he loved cold blooded animals

How can you not appreciate this guy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OE2hy7OAlMk

I reckon 20 years down the line my kids will be watching Irwin's kids on TV & I can tell them I used to watch their dad on TV, top geezer.

I've been to his zoo in Australia, there was a couple of the guys working there showing how the crocs attacked, was interesting, but they are asking for trouble sometimes.

As for Irwin he had the best interests of the crocs at heart, and he certainly rescued a great many by relocating them, the crocs would have been shot otherwise.
I'm not a fan of the guys that grab the snakes and other wildlife just to get a reaction, whats the point??

I'm a fan of Steves, I've watched alot of his stuff, saw him in interviews and he seemed a really nice bloke. He had a massive love for nature, he was excellent at what he did and his enthusiasm was infectious.

His death was bad luck, he is only the third person to be killed by a Stingray in Australia.

(extremely harsh James)

Yes he seemed to be reckless at times but I'm sure everything was calculated and the odds stacked in his favour.
His attitude and hands on approach entertained and encouraged a new generation of conservationists, because Steve was such a character it was hard to ignore him. How much better and more equipped are conservationists due to Steve's work? Lots imagine.
I can imagine a funny sketch of him taunting attenborough.
(read it in Steve's voice)

'yer see this creature? He's a miserable monotone little beastie, he likes hiding out in bushes...To afraid to get close to his prey. Right I'm gonna sneak up behind him and give him a wedgie, that uought to stir things up a bit.'
I couldn't disagree with you about his contribution to conservation.

I remember him being chased up a tree by a komodo dragon that actually bit one of his boots. If you're working within such tight margins of danger, an accident is more to happen in the long run. I just think a lot of his work on t.v. involved a lot of unnecessary risk taking that was designed to entertain rather than inform.

i remember watching one program where he rescued a croc from a war zone. local villagers kept it in a dilapidated concrete pond surrounded by rusty old barbed wire fencing but it had well outgrown it`s surroundings and was obviously stressed and suffering, its mouth was cut where it kept trying to break free. it was due to be shot and some local australian soldiers based there as peacekeepers had the idea of contacting steve.steve recruited some of the australian soldiers as helpers and they took the distressed animal and set it free miles away from people.
when he first saw the state of the croc you could see in his face he was upset, infact gutted. the soldiers working with him were all in awe of the bloke the way he went in that tiny concrete bowl to secure the croc.
i suppose you could be cynical and say he did this or that just to get a reaction but i think the fella was a genuine bloke who really loved animals. i think t.v stardom just happened to him by accident, he wasnt a driven media type only bothered about his career.

One thing I must add is the shock factor of his death. What I mean is that although working with dangerous animals was extremely risky he did seem like he could really communicate with them and I always his explaining of the dangers was spot on.... I don't reckon many kids tried to copy him.

I thought the bad press he had over carrying the kid into the croc pit was way OTT, he was a trained proffesional and grew up at the Zoo... It was his life and he knew EXACTLY what he was doing.

Even the current scene hasn't had a reply like this yet on their own Steve Irwin thread. Bit harsh like.

I was only kidding like. I didn't enjoy his show at all, but I wouldn't have wished that on the feller.

Bloody bad luck after handling all those dangerous animals that he gets done over by a stingray's tail piercing his heart.

I understand his friends were particularly gutted as they had advised him to wear sunscreen.

Would have protected him from the harmful rays.

RIP, Steve.

Although his shows often showed him diving around and taking great risks, he was always very much safety first. The editing made him look much more crazy than he was. He also did so much to teach people about wildlife and his work will be remembered for generations to come.

Everyone went way OTT about that baby incident, the man knew what he was doing and will be sorely missed by his family. BTW he was taught to dive and catch crocs by his old man when he was about 9 years old!

When asked about his favourite childhood programmes, Steve Irwin replied " Thunderbirds was great, but there'll always be a place in my heart for Stingray!"
