Lamar Clark

Post by Senya13 »

Can I give some info and corrections on him for 1958 without having to post news clippings in public access (because the corresponding pdf files have limited use licence with prohibited online republication)?

1955 fights must be either his amateur bouts or a namesake, Clark only became a pro in january 1958, having compiled 25-2 amateur record, with two wins in regional Golden Gloves in 1956 and 1957, i have clippings about two of his amateur fights in 1957, on Feb 6 he won the GG final in Las Vegas against Truman Lukenback, and Apr 4 he lost in quarterfinal of national AAU-championship to reigning champion Jim McCarter.
Info about his turning pro only in 1958 (6-rounder with John Hix) is given on several occasions, coming from Clark himself and his manager Marv Jensen.

1958-07-26 he won by KO4, not by KO2. Source: AP in 6 different newspapers:
West Jordan, Utah - Lamar Clark, 180, Cedar City, Utah, knocked out Joe Sullivan, 182, San Francisco, 4.

1958-09-11 Lamar Clark, Cedar City, Utah, 181, knocked out Rusty Davis, 201, Oakland, Calif., 2:01 in first of scheduled 6-round bout (source: Reno Evening Gazette, 09/12/1958), right now it's incorrectly given as 8-rounder.

1958-10-13 knocks out two opponents on the same night:
Ricky Smith, 181, Alameda, Calif., floored twice in the first round before a looping right hand stops him at 2:32 of the 1st round;
Oscar Talley, 179, Oakland, Calif., flurry of lefts puts him on the ropes where a left hook to the jaw drops him, counted out at 0:55.
AP gives his record after this as 14(13KO)-0-0 with 7 first-round knockouts.
All 6 events of this evening were planned for 4 rounds (not 8, as it is given now).

1958-11-10 knocks out three opponents on one night, although it was not planned. He agreed to replace a missing opponent for Dick Tanner, knocked him out, then that missing opponent arrived late, and Clark agreed to fight him instead of just knocked out Tanner.
Clark, 183, Cedar City, Utah.
Ken Howard, 179, Oakland, Calif., knocked out in 1st round, time 1:35.
Dick Tanner, 182, San Francisco, TKO3 when Tanner doesn't come out for 3rd round.
Maurice Leniece, 181, Ogden, Utah, knocked out in 1st round, time 2:11.
Clark received $300 for these three wins ($100 for each opponent).
Source: AP, in 5 different newspapers.

1958-11-28 some kind of tournament for the title of 'intermountain heavyweight champion'
Lamar Clark, 182, West Jordan, Utah.
1st opponent, Jimmy King, Elko, Nev., knocked out in 1st round, time 2:12.
2nd opponent, Hal Crump, Butte, Mont., 194, knocked out in 2nd round, time 1:40. Clark floores Crump early in the 1sr round, later in the same round Crump floores Clark twice for the count of 8 both times. 2nd round straight right to the head stops Crump.
Other results from the same card:
Jay Fullmer, 141, West Jordan, Utah, outpointed Frank Landers, 149, Kanab, 5.
Welterweight Andre Richards, Cedar City, Utah, won split decision over Al Clown of Las Vegas, Nev.
Manuel Elias, 125, won split decision over Kid Hardison, Las Vegas.
Middleweight Nate Ish, Phoenix, Ariz., stopped Willie Fuller, Las Vegas, in 3rd round.
Source: AP, in 7 different newspapers.

1958-12-01 same 'intermountain heavyweight champion' tournament. Only one fight was planned for Clark, but since he rid of his opponent very fast, his manager allowed him to take on several more (could be 7, but the last guy seeing all that desided not to fight and went home).
Clark, 185, 5'10"
1. Dale Randall, a right hand puts him to sleep at 0:22 of the 1st round.
2. John Loudd, Elko, Nev., stopped at 1:19 of the 1st round.
3. Dick Pearce, stopped at 0:44 of the 1st round.
4. Jackie Reed, 190, Ogden, Utah, dropped at 2nd second of the fight, referee stops the fight on TKO at 0:07.
5. Tom Kidd, knocked out in the 1st round.
6. Wayne Ennis, stopped at 1:37 of the 2nd round.
Source: NEA, in Charleston Daily Mail 12/09/1958.

1958-12-15 four-man heavyweight elimination event
Clark, 183lb, was supposed to meet 3 opponents, but he injured his hand in the 2nd fight (throwing just one punch, and he sprained his right hand)
Cornell Butler, 230, Detroit, knocked out at 1:21 of the 1st round.
Al Hedge, 174, Detroit, knocked out at 0:35 of the 1st round.
Source: AP in 4 newspapers.

1958-12-26 exhibition fight against a pro wrestler.
Lamar Clark, 183, West Jordan, Utah, stopped Eric (The Great) Forsland, 220, Salt Lake City, at 1:31 of the first round of a scheduled 8-rounder.
This wasn't boxing match, it was an exhibition.
Quote from fight description:
Clark, who says he'll fight anybody for the experience, dazed Forsland with a left to start the fight. Forsland tried a pair of double-fisted ramrod punches and abandoned that in favor of about 60 seconds of grappling.
After Clark swatted him into the ropes, Forsland's ankles caught in the second and third strands and held him upside down with his head banging against the floor.
While he was in this ungainly position, he was counted out.

Add weight
VERNAL, Utah - Lamar Clark, 183, Cedar City, Utah, knocked out Phil Paxton, 193, Phoenix, 1.
TOKYO - Sadao Yaoita, 122 1/2, Japan, outpointed Pascual Perez, 110, Argentina, 10 (non-title).
SAO PAULO, Brazil - Dogomar Martinez, 173 1/2, Uruguay, outpointed Luiz Inacio, 174, Brazil, 15. Martinez wins South American light heavyweight title.
Source: AP in Reno Evening Gazette, San Mateo Times, The Newark Advocate, The Salisbury Times (1959-01-17).
Also notice, that Martinez wins according to AP, not loses as it is right now. Can add weight for both fighters too.
Add weight to japanese fight too.

1959-01-23
Add weight and time
Salt Lake City - Lamar Clark, 183, Cedar City, Utah, knocked out Ox Anderson, 245, Salt Lake City, 2.
Source: AP in Appleton Post-Crescent, Fitchburg Sentinel, The Progress (1959-01-24).
According to The Albuquerque Tribune (1959-01-26):
Clark kayoed Ox Anderson, 245, in 1:38 of the second round on Friday night.

1959-01-24
Add time (also the location is spelled differently)
Albuquerque's Bob Hall became the 34th knockout victim of Utah heavyweight Lamar Clark Saturday night in Heber, Utah.
Clark, who has 34 kayos in his string of 35 boxing triumphs, takes on El Paso's Bill O'Hare tonight in Provo, Utah. Clark's win over Hall was registered in 2:50 of the first round.

1959-01-26
Add weight
Caracas - Sonny Leon, 128, Venezuela, outpointed Willie Pep, 130 3/4, Hartford, Conn., 10.
Caracas - Arthur Persley, 134, New York, outpointed Vicente Rivas, 136, Venezuela, 10.

Source: AP in Lancaster Eagle Gazette, The Greeley Daily Tribune, The New Mexican, The Newark Advocate, Warren Times-Mirror (1959-01-27).
Should be noted different weights are given for Leon-Pep bout than it is right now.
Add weights for Fleeman-Besmanoff and Persley-Rivas.

1959-01-28
Not Clark related, but while I'm at it, check different weight for Jones-Giardello, and add weight to Salas-Ceballos:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Ralph (Tiger) Jones, 156 1/2, Yonkers, N.Y., outpointed Joey Giardello, 162 1/2, Philadelphia, 10.
HERMOSILLO, Mexico - Lauro Salas, 129, Los Angeles, knocked out Chango Ceballos, 130, Hermosillo, 6.
Source: AP in Stevens Point Daily Journal (1959-01-29)

1959-01-29
Again, not Clark related, but should probably add scorecards for Folley-Miteff fight and weight, total rounds, referee, time and reason of NC to Stewart-Joyner
Judge Joe Ullmer voted 50-45 for Folley and Judge Bob Sauer had it 49-43 for Folley. Referee Max Baer, the former heavyweight champion, scored it 49-43 for Folley also. United Press International had it 50-42 for Folley.
...
The main preliminary, a scheduled six-round heavyweight bout between Floyd Joyner, 189 pounds, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Cortez Stewart, 183, of Harrisburg, Pa., was called "no contest" by referee Joe Ullmer. Ullmer stopped the match at 1:47 the fifth round on the grounds that the fighters were not fighting.
Ullmer said he warned both contestants several times to mix it before he decided to halt the affair.

1959-03-20
Weight, time
NAGOYA, Japan - Kazuo Takayama, 126, Japan, knocked out Katsumi Onizaki, 124, Japan, fifth round (Takayama retained featherweight title).
HAMBURG, Germany - Archie McBride, 189, Trenton, N.J., knocked out Albert Westphal, Germany, 191 1/2, ninth round.
MELBOURNE - Willie Vaughn, 162 1/2, Hollywood, Calif., knocked out Stefan Raduly, 165 3/4, Hungary, second round.
SALT LAKE CITY - Lamar Clark, 185, Cedar City, Utah, knocked out Rod Orrell, 200, Ogden, Utah, 1:29 first round.
Source: AP in Fitchburg Sentinel, Press-Telegram, The Newport Daily News, The Progress, Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune (1959-03-21).
Add weight Takayama-Kizaki, McBride-Westphal. Check weight for Raduly. Check name spelling for Kizaki, possibly different fighter?
Add officials and corresponding scorecards to Tony Anthony - Sonny Ray.
The three officials had Athony the winner by the following scores: Referee Ruby Goldstein, 8-2; Judge Frank Forbes, 6-3-1, and Judge Tony Castellano, 6-4. The AP card had Athony ahead, 8-2.
Source: AP in The Newport Daily News and The Progress (1959-03-21).

1959-04-01
Once more not CLark related, add referee and time of stoppage for Basilio-Seifer
Referee Eddie Coachman stopped the fight at 2:31 of the third round as Seifer was helpless in his corner.
Source: UPI in Independent and The Daily Courier (1959-04-02).

1959-04-04
Correct the round and add info about referee and knockdowns.
LAMAR CLARK, Cedar City, Utah, 186, scored a knockout against Tony Burton, 181, Los Angeles, in the sixth round of the semifinal. It was his 39th straight KO in 40 fights. Referee Jack Dempsey counted over Burton in the first round and twice in the sixth.
Source: AP in Independent Press-Telegram and Oakland Tribune (1959-04-05).
On the same card, check the type of result (UD) for DiPietro-Fullmer
DePietro got the unanimous decision. Both fighters weighed in at 158 3/4.
Source: UPI in Eureka Humboldt Standard (1959-04-06).

1959-11-27
Not Clark related
Check Miteff's weight, add officials, and, probably, add note about ringside scoring.
Tall, slender Hunter of Detroit, weighing 191 1/2 pounds to Miteff's 203 1/2, won a split 10-round decision over the broad-shouldered Argentina contender whom he had stopped in the seventh round at Syracuse, N.Y. Sept. 25.
Last night's verdict was booed by the 3,000 fans.
...
Referee Ruby Goldstein favored Hunter on a rounds basis, 5-4-1, and Judge Leo Birnbaum agreed, 6-4. But Judge Charley Rosen voted for Miteff, 6-4. The United Press International scored for Miteff, 5-4-1.
A poll of 15 sports writers at the ringside gave Hunter an edge, 8-7.

Fight against Charley Davis
At the bell Clark rushed his man against the ropes and bent him with a glancing blow but the fellow straightened and punched Clark diagonally across the ring. After a moment of further scuffling, Clark brought up a light uppercut in a clinch and fatso went down.
When he got up, Clark sprang in with a real uppercut to the chin and threw a left as fatty fell on his back. Blood spurted. The fellow seemed to be bleeding from both eyes, but then it was seen that the blood was gushing from a long cut across his left cheek. Perhaps the uppercut, glancing off the chin, has broken the face open or else the left hand had been a lot heavier than ringsiders thought. Clark's 40th straight knockout victim was scraped up and helped away.

stac---The http://www.newspaperarchive.com website has several years of The Reno Evening Gazette as well as the Nevada State Journal and around 1000+ other newspaper archives with some very good boxing papers...such as the Syracuse newspapers, Trenton Times, Bridgeport Times, Oakland Tribune, a slew of Ohio papers, Indianapolis Star, Kansas City Star and just a slew of other very good old newspapers dating from around the late 1700s, or early 1800s up to 2006. I always recommend the site to anyone who is interested in boxing research, or just research in general. The fees are pretty decent also with monthly pass, yearly pass and I'm pretty certain daily passes...I've been a member for three, or four years now and wouldn't think about dropping my membership!
