One of the fights that first got me interested in boxing this, Honeyghan going over to America and beating the seemingly invincible Donald Curry.

yeaaahhh, great win for lloyd, he really mugged old curry in that one. i couldnt believe how ineffective curry was, he was reputed to be unbeatable. i like lloyd always good to watch, exciting, do or die attitude, sometimes did and sometimes died. love ya lloyd. good article.

Great night! I rank Honeyghans win as the best ever by a British fighter alongside Turpins win over Robinson... but Honeyghan actually did it in Currys backyard!... superb!...

Yep, it wasn't pretty, he just went out there, jumped all over him and roughed him up big time. Curry never knew what hit him, and never got into the fight. Whilst with hindsight it seems clear that Don was having horrific troubles with the scales, I'm sure that had Lloyd shown him more respect and waited for his opportunities, Curry would have probably still won, he was bloody fast and a big puncher too.

I remember being really shocked too when a few years later McCallum ended his comeback with that one punch KO.

Time flies! I can remember Honeyghan getting off his stool at the start of round 2 against Johnny Bumphus and clocking him while he was still in his corner. Can't believe this fight was 20 years ago!

Thing was the way to beat Curry was to jump on him and force him back... its a shame though that Honeyghans career was hampered by his bad hands... interesting that he was having trouble even when he beat Curry... in some of his later fights he became almost a one handed fighter....

I was always indifferent about lloyd but I hated starling so watching the magic man put the beatdown on honeyghan is a painful memory...

I was actually there for this fight.

It was one of my first visits to the US and I went down from NYC to Atlantic City. I think it was called " The Brawl on The Boardwalk" great name

My uncle had never heard of LH and gave me 3-1 on Curry for $50 which was a chunk of change.

Me and my mate had the cheapest seats up in the gods and were some of the only brits there. Shouted ourselves hoarse and I knew LH was going to win it after about 2 rounds

Wow. What a fight to be at.

For me that's the greatest win by British fighter. After seeing Curry dismantle Milton McCrory in such devasting style I didn't expect too much from Lloyd but I can still remember being stunned at the way Honeyghan stormed into Curry from the off. Amazing stuff.

i remember this fight like it was yesterday was only a kid but playing cricket for Exmouth 2nds vs Ottery St Mary out in themiddle batting and hit my stumps so i could catch the fight on itv!

Some may not believe me but I actually thought Honeyghan had a chance to win as he had such self belief, I was still shocked at how he totally dismantled Curry...

yeah i was only a lad but i remember watching mccrory beat colin jones and draw with him in 2 tight contests a couple of years earlier.
when curry beat mccrory didnt mccrory get off the floor only to walk onto a devastating shot, i seem to remember the pictures were horrific of mccrory laying on the canvas.
then when curry stopped jones (on cuts?) and dodged the flying bottles he certainly looked the man.
great performance by lloyd but curry never turned up that night.

full credit to honeyghan but its one of the great mysteries how curry just lost his edge and never recovered it, overnight...

McCrory got up on very wobbly legs indeed, the referee waved the action on, and Curry just marched across the ring and struck McCrory with an almighty right uppercut right on the point of the chin. McCrory was totally defenceless at the time, and it's lucky that he wasn't badly injured. The fight should probably have been stopped when he got up, because he seemed rooted to the spot when Curry crossed the ring to hit him.

I think Curry was having murders making weight when he fought Honeyghan, wasn't there talk of him skipping in a rubber suit in the sauna to make weight or some such thing.

He was possibly already on the old white pony by then.

One of the biggest boxing upsets ever. Llloyd was given so little chance that they didn't even bother showing the fight live in the UK. It was on next day instead. ( pretty sure all Colin Jones world title fights were shown live in the UK )

That's a sad tale Honey relates about bumping into a down and out Curry all those years later.

He's still putting on the razzle dazzle, saw him at York Hall a while ago, wearing a big trilby, a fur collared long coat, baggy striped trousers, and a pain of black and white jazzer shoes with spats. He's certainly not the retiring type.

Lloyds fashion sense may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I dare say it would be a brave man even now who told him he looked like a twat to his face.

i was going to mention that in my earlier post that it was shown on a sunday afternoon. i`m sure the man or woman who introduced the program on the telly gave a bit of a hint along the lines of.......and now something you really dont want to miss if your a fight fan because it will be talked about for years, boxing from.....etc etc.
i remember as a lad thinking to myself does every american fighter wear bright yellow shorts because they all seemed to do back then.

Was this fight shown live? i seem to remember watching it recorded in the afternoon. i was 14 at the time, and remember after watching this fight i wanted to be like Honeyghan, only a lack of talent on my part prevented this happening.

yeah, now you mention it i seem to remember there being a bit of an outcry over that one. thousands of letters and phone calls etc into the telly station.
infact the more i think about it i`m sure its a bit of a legendary gaffe in t.v circles.

Yeah, I actually remember they had a whole build up the (Bruno-Witherspoon) fight on BBC1 with celebrity guests and everything, and then just before the fighters come out they said you can listen on the radio and off it went!

Really bizarre, something to with failed negotiations between the Beeb and Don King / HBO.

Honeygans win was great, I remember hearing the result on the radio and nearly choking on my breakfast. I had actually forgotten about the fight because I thought Lloyd would be slaughtered.
