How about fights where you think the stoppage could have come much much sooner and saved a fighter a lot of unnecessary damage

I listed Graziano/Zale III in premature stoppage thread. Also Paret/Griffith. Although fighters like Du Ku Kim and Jonney Owen ended up dying tragically it was not due to not stopping the fight in time.

Nelson vs Mcdonnell comes to mind... also perhaps Mccallum vs Watson... and Ali vs Holmes...

I wouldnt say Zale vs Gaziano 3 was premature... Rocky was counted out wasnt he?... he was certainly out of it at the finish...

I'd have to say Eubank v Watson II. Michael Watson was clearly not right as they came out for the last round and Eubank even gestured to Watson as if to say are you alright? Poor old Michael just stood there in a daze and the dickhead referee waved them on whereby Eubank launched an all out assault with little resistance coming from Watson.

A lot of people should have been held accountable for that fight's ending - the referee, the ring doctor, Watson's cornermen. :( :( :( :( :(

Not sure if this counts but at the end I thought Mercer was going to kill Tommy Morrison.

No, I listed it as the opposite, guess I should have made that clear in this thread, just assumed everyone had read the other thread.

I remeber that at the time the commentators were pondering whether the stoppage had come too early -- until Watson collapsed.

..even graziano in interviews said the ref should have stopped it sooner in their third match. jeez....he was still half out of it when he got up and the ref let it continue...

Calzaghe vs Lacy springs to mind. Lacy took a pasting and it never looked like things were gonna change. The ref should have pulled him out to save him from further damage........and embarrassment

While on this subject, some points to ponder on the Boxers Of The Past Forum, where the consensus seems to be that the old timers were alot tougher. If Jake LaMotta were fighting today, a referee probably sees him take one two many unanswered punches, and the Raging Bull loses by TKO, or maybe after Joe Jeanette goes down for a second time, the referee waves "it's over". And as for the flipside of the coin, Michael Moorer wanted to continue after being down 5 times against Holyfield, as did Richard Dunn after being dropped 6 times by Ali.

..let us not forget the cornermen...the guys who send their fighter out when he's obviously taking too much of a beating and has no chance of pulling the fight out. sometimes referees will let a guy finish the round and let a fighter get back to his corner, assuming...maybe hoping....they'll be the ones who end the punishment. too often the corner motivation is wanting their guy to go the distance and lose by decision, thus keeping the koby off the fighter's record.

..decag....it does look a little less damaging than it did live....but..those were fast hard punches and paret's head was just there as a target. i've defended goldstein as a good referee who froze....but the worst sin he committed was in being too far from the fighters. when one guy has the other pinned in a corner the ref should be virtually as close to the fighters as they are to each other. nanoseconds can be dangerous when punches are coming as fast as many pros throw them.

Their was really no point in letting Ossie Ocasio continue against Holmes. I believe he was dropped seven times in all. Give him credit for getting back up but he took alot of unessesry punishment.

If I remember correctly, Ocasio wasn't knocked down until the 7th round. After Ocasio was knocked down for the 3rd time, the referee was going to stop it becasue of the 3 knockdown rule. However, holmes waived off the referee and and the referee actually let the fight continue! Holmes quickly knocked down Ocasio again and the referee finally stopped it. I'v always wondered what would have happended if somehow Ocasio would have come back to win.
I haven't seen the fight since and it was 27 years ago. If anyone has seen it recently let me know how accurrate my memory is.
this was the 2nd fight of a doubleheader on Friday Night on ABC. In the first Shavers kncoked out Norton in the first round. They had a lot of air time to killFor some reason I remember them show a Battlestar Gallatica rerun.

Watching Benny slowly drop in the corner haunts your mind, after watching it I can play it in my mind perfectly.
