No doubt, Cosell was a complete tool but he did lend a broadcast a certain something.

I agree with you on Cosell. I don't respect his opinion but I do enjoy hearing his voice on the old broadcasts. I guess his voice was synonomous with a lot of great moments in boxing history. Same with Dunphy.
I enjoy Al Michaels & Barry Tompkins as well.
I have a copy of Duran v DeJesus II with Ferdie Pacheco co-commentating & it's probably the worst call I've ever heard - actually detracts from my enjoyment of that great fight - some of the lines he comes out with are way over the top.

Didn't Cosell become vehemently anti-boxing?

This topic has been done before but I will post in it anyway. I agree with Gil Clancy as the best color commentary as far as Tim Ryan he did'nt need to be a vast resevoir of knowledge becase he had Gil to do that. Ryans biggest asset was to know when to talk and when not to.

If you're talking current announcers Joe Tesatore and Teddy Atlas are not bad. Although Teddy tends to ramble a bit and has been known to be a bit of a know it all. Tesatore is a pretty good announcer but sometimes you think he is there just to parrot what Teddy says, like when Teddy tells how he scored a fight Tesatore will say, I have it the same as you Teddy. Tesatore always treads lightly making sure he never disagrees with Teddy, like he is afraid to say something he thought of on his own.

Keith Jackson who was never really a boxing anouncer actually was pretty good the few times I've seen him.

Dan Dierdorf who did Monday night football tried his hand at boxing commentary and was terrible. Paris Hilton knows more about boxing than he does.

I agree that Cossell can be somewhat grating but he did do alot to create intrest in boxing. I remember he hosted a special segment on the great middleweights of the past that was interesting. He also would go behind the scenes to let people get to know something about the fighters, sort of a human intrest type of profile. One example was his interview with Ron Lyle and introducing him to the public as someone who made some wrong choices and was now turning his life around. Before that Lyle was somewhat obscure. He always did that with fighters.

I like Howard Cosell but he sometimes was kind of nationalistic or bias with his countrymen. Specially when Sugar Ray Leonard fought, he exagerated the blows that NEVER HAPPENED.

I DO NOT LIKE JIM LAMPLEY AND GEORGE FOREMAN. THEY ARE AWFUL!!!

Tim Ryan was pretty good with Gil Clancy.
Also the one announcer that used to host SUPERBOUTS on ESPN was good.

Bob Sheridan, Don Dunphy and Ian Darke are classics.

In Spanish, I use to like Antonio Andere of Mexico. He was like the Howard Cossell of his country.

One of the best boxing commentators was Jerry Quarry,
who worked on CBS boxing telecasts for a time. Jerry
knew what was going on in the ring and was able to
convey his thoughts to the audience very well.

Here's that interview you mentioned with Lyle. :TU: BTW it's not my video.

Cosell wasn't that knowlegable about boxing, but he was good at building up a fight as a big event. He would make rather ordinary fight seem exciting.

Jim Lampley seems like a decent guy but he does somethings that are annoying. He constantly gives the wrong guy credit for landing a punch. Fighter A will land a good shot and Lampley will say that fighter B landed a good punch.
He also showed blatant favortism toward some fighters such as the Klitschkos, Lewis and Jones.
What he does do well is ask good questions from the "expert" anaylsts, who sometimes give good answers and sometimes don't.

George Foreman was often funny, but he seldom said anything about a fight or a fighter thant the average fan wouldn't have thought of.

Larry Merchant is so bad that sometimes he is good. He goes off on these weird anaolgies that seem pretty far fetched. (I've heard him talk about Abe Lincoln, Plato, the Last Supper, Louie Armstrong, Spain's occupation of the Philipines several centuries ago, and some other things that don't seem to have much to do with the fight but are sometimes funny).

Pacheco was a horrible announcer. Back in the late 1970's and early 1980's he was on NBC with Marv Albert. Albert was a pretty good play by play announcer.

Dierdorf as someone else mentioned wasn't very good, althoughh his partner Alex Wallau was pretty decent.

Barry Tompkins and Al Bernstien were decent. So was Sean O'Grady on USA's Tuesday night Fights in the 1980's. Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy were pretty good team for CBS in the late 1970's and 1980's.

Don Dunphy and Chris Schenkel were good announcers. Often they would do the fights by themnselves with no partner. Cosell also did fights by himself sometimes.

From the US i'd have to go for Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy or Barry Tompkins and Al Berstein. UK would be Reg Gutteridge and Jim Watt or Ian Darke and Glen McCrory. I can remember Jim Rosenthal doing Hearns - Duran and Hearns - Andries. Distinguishing features - dark eyes, prominent nose, slight tan and a plastic haircut, the true anchorman of ITV, Go on Jim (quality).

I'm surprised that Al Bernstein isn't getting mentioned more often. Guy was as good as anyone.

Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy were the best for my money. I especially liked their call in the Bert Cooper-Ray Mercer fight, which, by the way, was a good HW scrap.
