..gavilan/chuck davey has been on a couple of times...so with luck it willbe on again....sometime....

good list...i've seen some of them on live tv but don't recall them on espnc.......

...at least one ezzard charles/rex layne has been on...so that's a repeat i'd like. alas when i saw it live was in the era way before taping.

good start for a topic. there are many that we know exist and have been shown....many that exist that haven't been shown that must be available...

....and of course so many more that were never ever filmed or taped. for my, of those i'd like most to see were the pre-title fight robinson/lamotta battles and per/saddler one and two and....................sigh.....

johnny bratton on a good night when the handcuffs were off....dammit...got to quit......

ESPN Classic does have a rather strange playlist of fights. They've been showing a lot of fights lately between never heard of 'ems. And if they show Ali vs Blinn (or Mildenberg) again I'm going to scream. Can't beat Ringside though.

I'd like to see RINGSIDE do a special on the biggest tomato cans in boxing history...the list would be like this:

-Chuck Wepner
-Bruce The Mouse Strauss
-Mike Baker
-Peter McNeely
-Tom McNeely
-Butterbean

8) just as an example

I wish that ESPN would show the Ray Robinson/Kid Gavilan bout that was held in cuba, not sure if it was their first or second bout. ESPN has that fight, which was among the Bill Cayton library of fights that ESPN bought from him, but they have never shown in to my knowleadge, and I doubt they ever will. Talk about a waste, that is just one of hundreds, thousands of fights actually, that they will never show and just keep locked up in some vault.

there were so many great fights in the 80's as well. fighters that fans of a certain age grew up with. seems we get the same old black and white hurricane carter and sonny liston stuff, way too much Ali, or fights from the past 5 years from espn2. however, those FNF and TNF bouts have been a welcome change.

..raging b..robinson and gavilan never fought in cuba. their two fights took place in new york and philidelphia....rhe first a ten round over the weight...the second a 15 round title defense...riobinson of course won both. i've never heard of any films of these or any oher robinson title fights.

too lazy to check, but i don't think robinson ever fought in cuba.

gavilan did defend his title successfully against billy graham in cuba in the last battle of their series...could this be the one you're thinking of? don't know of any film of this....at least have never heard of one.

Kind of strange to hear someone say "way too much Ali"...but you have a point. Too much of a good thing can get to be a little stale after a while. Besides, you can't truly appreciate the genius of Ali until you see a lot of the other guys. Speaking of great fights from the 80's, they showed a couple of Tommy Hearns fights the other day. One was against ernie singletary. It was exciting to see a young, fast, classy hearns...I couldn't help but compare him to the likes of Judah, DLH, Forrest etc and wonder how he'd do against them.

How many freakin' times is ESPN Classic going to show the two Ali-Liston fights? Yes, both are historic fights in boxing history. But after you have seen each of them 50 times, they kinda lose their appeal. Same thing for Ali-Wepner, which was just on again last night.

brockton.....i didn't see the marcian/lastarza I fight on tv and have never seen a film of it. would like to. from what i can gather it was very close....many say it could have gone either way....not surprised that in a ten round bout at the time of both of these careers that it would be like that. later, marciano was just too strong and aggressive for lastarza, as their title fight showed....especially with the fifteen rounds scheduled. with marciano you had to build up an early lead to deal with his stamina that gave him the edge in the later rounds.

Your right Jaclem, I was thinking of the Graham/Gavilan bout, got mixed up with the locations. I have however read an article that stated that Bill Cayton had the title fight between Gavilan/Robinson in his collection, and that it is now in possession of ESPN. I will try and see if I can dig up that article somewhere, and post a link to it here for all to read.

..hey raging b...what a find that would be! (rhyming couplet unintentional)...it's an outrage if espn has that fight and doesn't show it! how about bombarding them with emails, regular mail..whatever....to get them to unloose this and others they may be holding....plus, if we can find the phone numbers of some espn people in charge we could call them in the wee hours of the morning.

reminds me that at two stages of man's life....babyhood and old....these are also the wee wee hours of the morning.

sorry ..... sometimes i should restrain myself but don't...

Monzone/Benvenuti 1 and 2

1 was one of the most action filled 12 rounds of all time.

2 was short but action packed as well.

I have a feeling that ESPN is waiting for a better internet-based delivery method before releasing all the fights they own. My hunch is that they'll set up a site similiar to iTunes where we hardcore enthusiasts will be able to buy and download these fights (or other sporting events) we're dying to see.

I would like to see this fights on ESPN Classic:

Ali vs Bob Foster
Ali vs Patterson II
Monzon vs Napoles
Monzon in all his title defenses
Hagler in all his title defenses
Duran in all his title defenses
Canto in all his title defenses
All Jofre's fights
All Bob Foster's KO wins
All Saad Muhammad's fights
All Aaron Pryor's fights
All Wilfredo Gomez' fights
All Emile Griffith's fights
All Olivares' fiights, specially when he was a bantam phenom
All Mantequilla Napoles' fights
All Vicente Saldivar's title defenses

And classic bouts like: Curry-Monroe Brooks, Palomino-Benitez, Palomino-Muniz, Mancini-Frias, Laguna-Buchanan I & II, and anything that do not include Ali-Foreman, Ali-Frazier or any other Ali's repeated fights.

The Monroe Brooks - Bruce Curry fight was a great fight.
I remember that fight well and get this.
If I remember correctly it was on Abc or Nbc or Cbs on a Friday night.
Days of yore.

Some of Julian Jackson's fights would be great. Especially since he just made the hall of fame.

I happened to catch Lewis-Briggs on ESPN the other night. It was a great fight...much better than I remembered. They both performed very well. Made me miss the old days when there was actually some talent in the heavywt div. A prime Lewis vs a young, hungry briggs. Both men built like mack trucks. Lewis looked sharp. He fought a smart fight too, baiting Briggs and drawing him, then driving him to the deck 3 times with fast, explosive counters before the ref stopped it. Entertaining as hell. And briggs didn't give up. He was a warrior all the way. Swung back gamely even when he was hurt...he just couldn't catch the elusive lewis. I couldn't help but draw comparisons to Tyson, Ali and today's heavywts. I think a prime Tyson would take lewis. Ali would have been too mobile, too fluid for lennox...But it might have been very close. Today's heavywts suck in comparison to lennox and briggs. The fact that briggs won a title tells you how much the talent pool has declined.

I saw it the other night also. Lennox before the bell rang in the first round looked very energized to fight. They both had the heart to fight but the later the fight got Lennox's talent took over. Surprising fight given by ESPN, I give them kudos.
