Since Spinks
Since Spinks
Is there anyone who could have beaten Mike at 175 since his retirement?
Virgil Hill?
IMO Mike would be way too much for Hill. I appreciate Hill's skills but he has neevr been in this league and would get KO'd in 7-8 rounds.
James Toney?
Toney is smart and durable, although who knows what version will turn up on any given night. Spinks' physical traits would cause him too many problems and the right hand would have James hesitating. Spinks would chop up Toney in an ugly 15 round UD.
Roy Jones?
Jones has speed and unorthadox moves but Spinks would deal with him handily IMO. I'm not sure Jones has ever been in with a fighter of Mike's ability. The way Spinks could time a missed hook to land an elbow was really something. Spinks jab and right coupled with better inside fighting makes me see this as a bad match up for Roy. Spinks would take a late stoppage.
Tarver
Tarver would be totally outclassed. His physical attributes might make this tough early on but I can't see him posing too many problems.
Johnson
Spinks would be looking to keep him off with his right hand and would maintain a distance where Mike could control the fight. UD
Woods
I can see Spinks stopping Woods in the middle rounds. Clinton wouldn't get away with taking as many flush shots as he currently does.

Good question Ezzard. I think out of all of the fighters mentioned Roy Jones would stand the best chance.Ezzard wrote:Is there anyone who could have beaten Mike at 175 since his retirement?

Re: Since Spinks
Hmmm, let’s see.
Spinks by mid to late round KO over Virgil Hill. Hill’s slippery style makes it a close and competitive fight before the jinx closes the show.
Spinks by dull, UD over James Toney. Toney just can’t seem to get past the jab right hand of Spinks.
Roy Jones unorthodox style and reflexes prove to be a bit much for Spinks as he drops a close UD to RJJ.
Spinks by early KO over a completely over-matched Tarver.
Johnson provides an interesting and close fight for Spinks, but comes up on the short end of a close UD.

The only fighter listed with half a chance against Mike Spinks would be Roy Jones, although I could see Spinks catching up with him and KOing him at some point.
Michael Moorer is the best LH since Spinks and before Jones, again I see Spinks catching up with Moorer at some point and KOing him. Moorer - Jones would be an interesting fight at 175...............

Forgot Moorer. He was some puncher at 175 but not sure he could have taken Mike.dr_devious wrote:The only fighter listed with half a chance against Mike Spinks would be Roy Jones, although I could see Spinks catching up with him and KOing him at some point.

Re: Since Spinks
As you rightly say Virgil Hill was a skilled fighter who desrves respect for what he achieved at 175lbs, he was a good Champion with a good Boxing brain. But, Spinks was a great Champion with a great Boxing brain. In other words Spinks for me is a level above Hill and would beat him on points. Hill was very durable but if he froze against an old Tommy Hearns how would he react after tasting The Spinks Jinx? A late stoppage would not shock me but a lean towards a comfortable points win for Spinks.Ezzard wrote:Is there anyone who could have beaten Mike at 175 since his retirement?

Toney never really impressed me at 175lbs, sure he has skills and plenty of savvy but so has Spinks whose faster handspeed and much better workrate leads him to another points win.Ezzard wrote:James Toney?

This is by far the toughest one to call for me. Spinks never faced anyone with the speed and reflexes of Roy Jones Jr and Jones Jr never faced anyone near as good as Micheal Spinks at 175lbs. They may even spit a trilogy, the only reason a slightly lean towards Spinks is I believe Spinks could take anything that Jones Jr may land on him, but if Spinks lands that Spinks Jines on Roys chin, it may very well be goodnight Jr.Ezzard wrote:Roy Jones?

Another Spinks points win, as above were talking about the difference between good and great 175lbs'ers.Ezzard wrote:Johnson
