Ike Ibeabuchi making a comeback?

Post by The warrior »

This article is from fightnews.com:Ibeabuchi legal team making progress!

July 23, 2002

By Jamie Aquino

Lawyers for Ike "The President" Ibeabuchi confirm the former heavyweight contender has been paroled on the first of two sentences. In addition to filing an appeal, they are also working on getting him eligible for parole on the second sentence.

Ibeabuchi was accused of sexually assaulting a dancer for a Las Vegas outcall service at the Mirage Casino in July 1999. He has been sentenced to 5-30 years.

At the time of his arrest, Ibeabuchi was ranked No. 2 by the IBF and was one of the world's most promising heavyweights. He is undefeated at 20-0 with 15 knockouts. He was impressive in wins over contenders David Tua and Chris Byrd, who he kayoed in five rounds.

"It is conceivable that Ike could be out of prison in six months to a year, or perhaps sooner" said lawyer Michael Koncz of the Law Offices of Jack H. Anthony located in Orange County, California. "We are all working very hard on his case."

After communicating with Ibeabuchi for countless hours on a regular basis, often 3-4 times a week since the latter part of December 2001, Koncz has become what Ibeabuchi was without in the past, a true friend.

"It is solely for this reason that I am committed to helping Ike and at my personal expense, have undertaken the task of compiling and retaining a new legal team to assist in achieving final resolution of Ike's legal problems."

The legal team includes David Chesnoff of Las Vegas, his associate Richard Schonfeld, Brian Russo of Arizona, Rajan Maline of Orange County and David Raft of Orange County.

"Our goal and effort is to see Ike free so he can fight again,"said lead attorney Chesnoff.

According to Chesnoff, Ibeabuchi is withdrawing his plea that was entered on his behalf by the public defenders office on January 24, 2002 because he was medicated at the time and it may have inhibited his judgement.

Ibeabuchi, for the past six months, has been using his time in prison to train and is excited about the possibility of getting back in the ring.

Sources indicate he is in the best mental and emotional state he has been at in years.

"His dream, and more than ever, Ike's desire is still there," Koncz said. "To be the next dominant heavyweight champion of the world."

As a boxing fan I might be intrigued ...
The guy has enormous potential as a fighter
but there are other things to consider
Unfortunately he's more dangerous out of the ring than in the ring..
Beating on Professional Prizefighters in the ring is one thing..
beating on women and children out in the real world is something else..
The guy is a complete nutter
He belongs in jail... for a long time

Furthermore all these slimy lawyers are just looking at the $$$$$$$ . All this smarmy lawyer BS about "Ike needs a true friend"
Gedouttahere!!!! ---That guy's just looking to cash in when the Prez gets sprung. that lawyer chump should be locked up himself
Ibeabuchi is a truly dangerous individual who does not need to be walking the streets

ike used to get dropped from BODYSHOTS in sparring by a joke fraud fighter called kirk johnson.

the guys has been inactive for 3 yrs and is grossly overweight and unable to behave himself even if he is paroled. the guy is finished, and probably wasnt the guy you all think he was int he first place nayway.

Overhand...Ruiz got dropped from Kirk's bodyshots too. The ones from the waist down probably do hurt. My question is...Does Johnson foul out in sparring sessions too?

Seriously, Ike is a real long shot here. A long, long shot. First he has to get out of prison. His lawyer may not be the most imaprtial 'judge' as to his chances of getting out, and the time table may be a little overly optimistic. If the time table holds true (let's say 1 yr), by the time Ike returns to the ring, he will have been out of the ring for 4 years. 4 years!!! 4 years without training seriously. 4 years without really working on his boxing skills. Ike only fought as a professional for 4.5 years. Almost as much time not honing his skills, as practicing them. It will take years (maybe 2.5 yrs) if he is committed to training and getting back where he was. The problem is Ike is a repeat offender. The likelihood of him not having a run-in with the law are not good. On top of this, he reportedly is not the most mentally stable person. Before he went to trial there was some concern about his mental status, and his ability to help with his defense. Ike's biggest challenge, if he gets out, may not be in the ring, but in life.

Is this post a joke? Has anybody seen Ike? He is HUGE! He is virtually unrecognizable! There is no way he's making a comeback! I'll try to hunt down a photo--I gone one somewhere.

Those who come out of the joint need money. I see no reason why IKE can't make an Oliver McCall type of comeback. Never a polished boxer, Ike had great power, strength, and stamina. If he gets in shape and steers clear of the law, I think he can crack the top ten with the aid of some favorable match making.

Even though its old and was bumped by a bot, it always amazes me how incredibly over rated Ike was and still is to some extent.

That time table for his parole sure did turn out to be overly optimistic, as he's still in prison and won't be up for parole again until 2012.

The sport of boxing is littered with the wasted potential of men like Ike Ibeabuchi, Edwin Valero, and to a lesser extent James Kirkland and the mediocre Paul Spadafora.

He had all the tools, no loses and some quality wins on his record. He outsluggied prime Tua (or anyway gave him a close fight, taking his best shots without going down) and KO'd very slicky opponent in Byrd in his next fight.

Some say he was still quite crude technically, but, although true, it does not convince me at all. On the contrary, if you have a fighter winning already against top fighters while still improving (and Ike was improving), you'd rather give him the benefit of the doubt against even better opponents in the near future.

Ike is still VERY overrated. He squeaked past Tua in a VERY entertaining fight, and then stopped Byrd. That's it really. IMO he couldn't have beat an aging Lewis or either Klitschko.

Well, around the time Ike went to prison, Lewis got upset by Rahman and Klitschko by Purrity (OK, this one was a little earlier, but later Sanders and Brewster did the same).

Beating prime iterations of Tua and Bryd suggests he would be a top 5 fighter today. I think he had a lot of potential to be a title holder and beat some more top 10 opponents.

Are you serious!? A prime Ike would've decapitated an aged unmotivated Lewis.
