Tommy Paul Query

Post by Ric »

I received the following e-mail from Paul's cousin. Can anyone verify the info?
Hi i have been doing research on my cousin Tommy Paul. I
found boxrec to be a great resource for his record. But one
fight dated 1/24/36 against Frankie Eagan as a L 10. The
fight according to the Buffalo News (1/25/36) reports a W 10
for Tony Paul (Tommy's brother) against Frankie Eagan. I
emailed Shep to change Tommy's real name and date of death,
which he did but no response to this fight. I made a copy of
article for proof if needed. thanks Bob Caico.

Bob,
In 1996 I did some research on Tommy Paul , whose real name is Gaetano Papa. It is to my understanding that Tommy had retired after his Mar.22 1935, 10 round loss to Holman Williams in Detroit.
Many reference books credit him different records. The Ring Record Book says he had 78 wins, 25 losses, & 10 draws or "no decisions) in 113 bouts.
Who's Who in Boxing gives him a 77-24-9 record in 110 bouts, & the Boxing Encyclopedia puts it at 78-25-11 in 114 bouts. However they all agree he knocked out 28 opponents. Tommy Paul was one of "Buffalo's six world champions" honored in Buffalo in October of 1997 for his achievements and contributions to the sport of boxing, by the local chapter of The National Veteran Boxers Association, RING #44. His children were in attendance of the engagement, and a biography on his boxing career, with his complete boxing record from the RRB was part of the program book. My understanding is his surviving family have since moved to Florida from their home on Hazeltine Ave in Kenmore, NY.
If you'd like you can contact me directly, if I can be of more help to you. :P

From my research, I come up with his record of 80-30-8 with 25 KO's. But 3 fights after 3/22/35 Holman Williams fight cannot be verified. Hamilton, Severo, Boree, per Boxrec.

Also found a duplicate record. 3/22/34 and 3/22/35 against Holman Williams in Detroit. They only fought once, that in 1935. Paul's record should be 80-29-8. Thanks.

Thanks for changing duplicate record on Williams fight. How about the Eagen fight? Thanks Bob C.
