Info on Pan-Am Games - May 1926 in Buenos Aires

Does anyone have the names of the American boxers who would have competed in these games in 1926? Thanks in advance.

USA boxers won 3 of 8 divisions at the second Pan-Am games in May 1926. Here are the results as I compliled them, USA first:

Captain Charles Mabutt coached the team. The trainer was "Lacy"

Fly: Lawrence Lyons L 3 Uber (arg)
Bantam: Joseph Katkich L 3 Gogliardo Purcaro (Arg)
Feather: Francis "Dick" Collins L 3 Pasqual Bongiglio (ARG)
Light: Jack McCarron W 3 Oscar Garzon (ARG)
Welter Chales Halloran L 3 Mendez (Arg)
Middle: Arthur Flynn W 3 Meliante (Uraguay)
L-Heavy: Joe Monte L3 Guillermo Silva(URG)
Heavyweight : Stanley Simmons W 3 Veloyo (Chile)

The original plan was to have the 8 winners of the April 1926 AAU championships at Boston to represent the team at Buenos Aires. I havent checked one list agaisnt the other but I know Monte was a runner-p and Katkich won at 118, Lyons at 112.

Ed Tiernan, who won at welter ove Charles Halloran did not make the trip -- Halloran did.

Any help with first names for the So. AMericans appreciated

Thanks for the info! I wonder why Ed Tiernan didn't make the trip? Perhaps an injury? I do know the team set sail for Buenos Aries from New York on Saturday April 10th.

No NY boxers went to Buenos Aires; in fact, only 3 1926 AAU champs – Lyons, Katkish, and Flynn – made the trip, the others "having been compelled to reject offers to make the trip" (NYT). The original team announced on April 7 included two New Yorkers, Lown and Donohue, but they also pulled out the next day. They could not all get injured at once. As you could see from the research you’ve done for your great article on Ed Tiernan (I assume that http://home.earthlink.net/~inkpen/id4.html was based in part on this discussion), he had a scheduling conflict and preferred to participate in the NY State AAU championships, which he won. On the date of AAU finals the team actually just left Buenos Aires, they returned to New York only on June 8.

Good stuff! Interesting how they all backed out. Holleran is the only name I recognize...funny how Ed Tiernan beat him at the Boston Armory and Holleran ends up in the Pan Am Games. That seems like a long trip for the games, apparently leaving April 10th and not returning until June 8th? No planes back then – no wonder they all decided to skip this dual meet and participate in a more important, to them, event. There are always multiple reports about champs and amateur teams leaving Europe/New York, arriving in New York/Europe a few days later, taking a train to wherever, etc.

I think it makes sense to write something to the effect of Tiernan being unable to participate in the PanAm tourney and fighting in the state championships instead; I seriously doubt that he was injured along with all the other AAU champs that backed out.

I am proud to say that my paternal grandfather was Stanley H. Simmons, champ in the heavyweight division. I grew up hearing the story of the 1926 fight. Besides being a good fighter, he was a terrific grandfather. A real gentle giant of a man.
