British only produce punchers, hardly ever quality boxers.

Post by Evander »

The British gym scene is focused on punching mainly.

Name me 5 top quality boxers who stepped up and challenged the world and beat them.
Honest champions who fought and beat the best.
Not to say the British have not had their fair share of great boxers.

But punching is the pre requesitie in gyms around the United Kingdom.

Look at Mexican boxers.
Even if they are not tough.
Almost all of them have the basics.

I reckon so but lets ask, mcguigan, lennox, hatton, calsaghe, eubank or some other british fighter for their opinions.

Can't really count Lennox as he didn't really learn to box in British gyms.

Throw Conteh in instead

Barry avoided Nelson like a bad rash.
Lennox was a Canadian bred.
Hatton is a puncher.
Calzaghe   I doubt he even qualifies as a pro.
Eubank only fought home grown opponents, ask anyone who Eubank was stateside.
Lewis I'll give you.

The Brits only provided punchers.

Only the odd British boxer can be classed as a true boxer who did well.

You Brits are so in denial.

Honeyghan was a puncher.
Benn was a puncher.
Eubank was a domestic.
Calzaghe is a domestic.
Sibson was a puncher.
It goes on and on.

I know you will attack me.

But you know the way you train your fighters.

Look at Ricky Hatton.
The guy doesn't even know how to throw a jab

His style is from the dark ages.

It's pathetic really.

You get by on publicity rather than skill.
Your fighters are boxing's "Spice Girls".
All hype and no substance.

Hand picked drama queens like Joe Calzaghe.
You don't want to fight.
The ring walk like a dart match ring walk is the highlight of a event.

You do know that in the UK we can no longer say 'cleaner' (it has been trademarked by the Hitmans union) and a 'domestic' is a hospital cleaner?

Joe battered Lacy with his fists not his toilet brush.
Did anyone tell you
We wanted that fight to see what he looked like.

The worst Lacy looks the worst Calzaghe does.

Stretch that win out why don't you

Do you think Marvin Hagler still throws that win at Thomas Hearns?

Make a move and have a fight or use your newspapers to satisfy your mainstream.
Out here.
No one is shaking :-?

Lacy got old .

stracey
calzaghe

fact is more world champs have come from these shores than from the states if you want an argument. although there are statistically more assh...s who come up with shiiiithead posts in the US than the UK.

US population 300million
UK population 60million

So, to ensure an even playing field, for every boxer named here, you need to name 5 form the US.

As the post before named 10, please list your 50 US boxers (not punchers remember) who've stepped up and made it on the world scene.

Name 1 that completely dominated.
Witter
Everyone avoided Herol anyway.
When he stepped up McCallum oupointed him and Julian Jackson ripped his head clean off.

Graham could easily have got the decision, as there was nothing between the two and I seem to remember McCallum taking a count. Graham was also robbed vs the excellent Kalambay, in their 2nd fight.

A lot of our fighters have held their own vs the elite - Billy Hardy was also a bit unlucky when he fought Canizales first time, Brodie was robbed vs Jorrin, etc etc.

We also have a fine tradition of battles for the British, Commonwealth and European titles, and have had special moments of world class inspiration like Kirkland Laing schooling Duran, Stracy beating Napoles, McGuigan beating Pedroza, Honeyghan smashing Curry.

We've also had fine fighters like McMillan, McKenzie, Paul Ingle, all of whom made impacts on the world scene.

Lewis dominated the biggest division of all, heavyweight,, with a punch and boxing skills. That made him the top man in boxing, who had the 'great talents' running for cover, Bowe, Holyfield and Tyson. Some ppl cannot get over this, and never will.

Buchanan - a beautiful jab and mover - is a legit Hall of Famer, who had the misfortune of being in the Duran era. It took a lot of clinching and a nasty low blow to take the Scot's title, and don't forget Kenny beat HOF'er Ismael Laguna in both Puerto Rico and New York.

Calzaghe merely ducks Europeans - robbing his legacy of a huge chunk - but he batters the fvck out of Americans and Brits, and his speed and longevity have to be admired. In fact, he's wasted vital moments of his career waiting for Hopkins (who backed out), and Taylor (who doesn't want to move to 168 now).

Hatton stopped a legit great (Tszyu), and has won world titles in 3 consecutive fights, soon to be four (Urango). IF he beats Castillo, he has done in his 2nd Hall of fame worthy. I suspect WBO champ Ricardo Torres gets HBO approval soon, then Hatton will have taken down five current world title holders if all goes well.

The British stereotype is of an upright, stiff backed jabber of clean technique but little felxibility. Hatton and Calzaghe show how far this has receded into the past. Hatton is a Mexican styled pressure fighters who does things like cutting the ring off and abusing his opponents' bodies...I've never seen Calzaghe do a 1 punch KO, and he prefers to overwhelm with handspeed and workrate - when on form he can do it in an eduated way.
