Eammon Magee-Oktay Urkal

Post by Autobarn »

anyone seen this fight? Was it a fair decision? I would've thought that Magee had more than enough talent to beat Urkal.

Close fight, but fair decision. Urkal is a very underated fighter (in his prime). Magee looked probably the more talented but didn't quite press the action enough to get the win.

Fight could have gone either way, but the general consensus was that being on home soil and the champion, Urkal did probably nick it.

A similar fight happened in the main event that evening with Starie vs Ottke.

Close fight???WTF are you talking about, Urkal SCHOOLED Magee....Magee tried to goad Urkal and make him stand toe to toe and exhange....Urkal obliged, showed his underated toughness and proceeded to bust Magee up.

Urkal is/was a lot smarter that people give him credit for.

I was saying to some of the Americans who think Cotto will walk through this guy that it could we end up being a tough fight for Miguel depending on what Urkal has left and if Cotto comes in under motivated.

I felt Ottke was in clear command vs Starie - he outmaneouvred him and landed more - even if they were little pecking punches

Urkal schooled Magee?? I have never heard such shit. Urkal was probably a deserved winner but more than once Magee literally stood centre ring and looked bemused as the Turk ran a marathon around the ring. Urkal knew full well he didn't need to engage as by running he would just win the rounds anyway. In the end it was close (i have it on video somewhere Maussa, off Eurosport) with not much between them...but Magee being schooled? Utter bollocks.

Yeah I have to say, I didn't find it a close call at all - Urkal was a clear winner.

Magee was busted up pretty badly by the end and walked onto punches for most of the fight - He fought a poor tactical fight.

Whether Urkal won or not (which i don't doubt he did) his antics at the end were despicable, running round the ring and blatantly refusing to fight should have meant an automatic round against him.

Schooled? Please watch the fight again. I agree with what everyone else has said. I remember being angered bu Urkal running away and taunting like a cocky school kid.

Urkal won the fight clearly. It's not a great style to watch but it was very effective. constant lateral movement and fast, accurate combos which had Magee's face looking the worst mess i've ever seen it.

Completely the wrong style for Magee who was frustated as he was always a step & a half behind.

Thank you and well put.....now i know why some people should not be let anywhere near boxing and why we have so many dodgy decisions when these type of people end up as judges.

I bet even if you ask Magee he would say he clearly lost that fight and he underestimated Urkal.

Since when was Wolverhampton in Ireland, Gimpsons?

I thought you were from the midlands, so you should know better :o

On the subject of Magee - Urkal I though Urkal had the edge throughout and whilst he displayed negative tactics, Magee suffered from not being able to draw a lead from him. Wrong opponenet for someone of Magee's style.

Well he was asked this in the post fight interview and he thought he was shafted and wanted an immediate rematch. Also was annoyed at Urkal's tactics.

As for Starie vs Ottke, I thought Starie won the first 3 rounds, and won 2 of the last three.

I had it 7 rounds to 5 for Ottke, with some of the Sven rounds debatable. Definately felt Starie had to the tools to beat Sven.

Close-ish but Urkal had to be given the nod. Magee could have done more, as was the case with him in the Hatton fight. Urkal was a tough nut, he matched Magee in that depertment, good solid boxer too. I remember rating him highly after watching this fight. Never seen him since though, so here's my question:

How did Urkal perform in his 2 world title shots against Harris?

Fight 1 : Really well. Was much more aggressive than vs Magee and outworked Harris throughout. I thought he was jobbed (yes, even at home) big style.

Fight 2: Looked faded, couldn't get into it completely different fighter.

The first was close, Urkal could have been given the nod. The second Harris took control and KO'd his man clinically, excellent performance by Harris.

I would maybe suggest Urkal is now a faded force judging by his showing against Maxim Nesterenko, shame as a few years ago Urkal would have given Cotto trouble but now i am tempted to suggest the Puerto Rican MAY walk through him, he looked class finishing off Quintana and is a definate force at Welterweight.

Urkal definitely 'beat' Harris first time. Vivian didn't know what to do that night.
