The United States of great fighters.

Post by Syntax Error »

Choose a state then choose who you think is that state's greatest ever fighter.

When you reply, if you agree with the choice, then put agree then list another state & fighter.

If you don't agree with the choice you select your choice & continue as above

Obviously some states are going to be easier than others. I'd imagine that Philiadelphia might be quite a tough one maybe. :-?

Being British, I will start with a nice easy one:-

Delaware = Michael Spinks.

As Michael was born and reared in St Louis Missouri shouldn't he be categorised as being from that state? I know he lived/lives in Delaware but...

Fair point.

I suppose it could get quite confusing as fighters do move around.

Yes, but to be fair I'm having trouble thinking of anyone else from Delaware to put in the list! NY and Penn are a bit easier!

this thread could be very tricky, apart from the normal issue`s dont forget some of those redneck southern states still refuse to accept the legitamacy of the union.
arkansas for example.......... :TU:
they think they were dragged to the table and made to sign under duress by yankee rough riders led by generals sherman and stonewall jackson, who in turn were under the control of fancy eastern big city types that were slicker than a greased hog in their talkin`.
yess - sir - ee they still rue the day the railroad rode into little rock.

I don't think many would describe Stonewall jackson as a yankee ruff rider who forced the south to sign.

1) He fought for the south
2) He was dead by then

Another easy one Connecticut = Willie Pep

If were're going strictly on where fighters were born Alabama is going to be surprizingly hard as many great fighters such as Joe Louis and Evander Holyfield were born there but moved or fought out of other places.

Indiana = Tony Zale?

Holyfield fought out of Atlanta but I'm pretty sure he was born somewhere in rural Alabama no idea where.

Jack Dempsey must be the best fighter born in Colorado.

greb was from pittsburgh and as great a tradition pennsylvania has in the fight game surely they`ve produced no one better than him.

kentucky............ali
georgia................ray robinson

on that list colorado`s best fighter is down as chalky wright and conneticuts is down as melio battina.
if j-c is correct regarding places of birth then his shouts of dempsey for colorado and pep for conneticut have got a good chance of making it.
