Floyd Mayweather is saving boxing!

Post by OLD-LONDON-RULES »

Just as Sugar Ray Leonard did after boxing was going through a rough spell after Muhammad Ali, PBF is holding the sport up with his talent in an era where the Heavyweights are a joke, public interest in the sport is on the decline with talented athletes are choosing other sports and the fad of MMA is taking fight spectators away.

If PBF can beat ODLH it will send him over the top, hopefully then for the last few years of his prime the win will force him into overdrive with the trash talk and backing his words up in the ring, he has the pedigree, the persona and more importantly the boxing skill to really be a World wide mega star by taking out chumps with inferior skills that are idolised in other Countrys around the World therefore stealing other fighters fans hearts and minds.

Common PBF drives himself to fights in a Ferrari...he is THE MAN.

BTW,So called boxing writers and wannabees may not use or edit any part of this post for their own use!

If PBF is the saviour of boxing why is it that he is barely known outside of boxing circles and fans? He is technically brilliant but boring to watch and has an arseh0le for a persona.

Why didn't you try reading the post instead of just the title? i was talking about Floyds potentail if he beats ODLH, NEVER again would the haters be able to say PBF don't take the big fights, he aint as good as he thinks and the army of ODLH fans will be exposed to the skills of PBF.

Since Ali boxing NEEDS the fighter with superior skills who will trash talk...it's a love-hate thing, morons who just don't get it will tune in, in the hope of seeing him get beat.

Look at Fatton, a PR fraud who says all the right things while milking his moronic fans for their money whilst fighting old men, bums and blown up lightweights...Fatton likes to make friends with all his opponants before he fights them so he can get the needle out the fight, can you imagine how much PBF would wind Fatton up pre fight???

Fatton would be FORCED to fight out of his skin or else he would be battered from the first second of the first round and humiliated...and probably would even at his very best....i guess thats what sh!t boy is scared of!

straight question: Why do you think fight fans think differently of ALI, than they do of MAYWEATHER? Do you think it is just due to the passage of time?

Ali won hearts for his anti war and anti racism beleifs, he was around at the right time,no one wil ever duplicate what Ali done inside and outside the ring... but even he was not loved by everyone all of the time and said and done things that were hated at the time by some white people.

PBF can be more of a SRL.

Fair point - his fight with Ernie Terell for example, his Nation of Islam connections. Do you think people would think more of PBF if his combative/abrasive persona was tempered somehow, not neccesarily by words?

Hopkins is a good example IMO. He is very outspoken and can be offensive, but he is lauded as an example to ex-cons.

Maybe my 'dislike' of PBF is a little irrational (although as I have said before, I cannot question his skills as a boxer and technician), but he does seem to delight in being objectionable.

Maybe he should have someone else mention all his charity work (i assume he does some).

SRL seems to have done a PR job on himself, doesn't he? He was not overly popular when he was fighting, now there seems to be a warm glow around him.

Yeh, great fighters go through transitions, i honestly think PBF has all it takes to be up there with the greats and is under appreciated right now for whatever reasons and thats why he NEEDS to be abrasive right now to stoke his own fire, i just hope all the stars allign on the night he faces ODLH...BECAUSE BOXING NEEDS HIM!

BTW, SRL could be as ignorant and rude as anyone in his prime.

Does it damage boxing for DLH to win? you have to admit its a 50-50 fight

As I say, SRL did a PR job post-retirement

90% of people despised early clay/ali too & came to see him lose, but he has since been evaluated for his overall impact on the game...i'm not saying PBF will rival ali for impact, but history will judge him alot more favorably than current media or fans do!! :TU:

Yes it is a 50-50 fight, and short term boxing is the winner, but if we are talking about the sport catching fire for the next few years then that lies in the hands of a PBF win.

Maybe..or maybe you will just be reminded of what a bad state the future of the sport is in, after all Audley Harrison is an olympic gold medalist?

looking at the last olympics where scoring seemed haphazard and even random (clean, big shots not scoring - points being added to scores during long periods without a shot being landed) i wouldnt hold too much hope that the best fighters will be certain to win.

fair enough, but the chance of seeing the next DLH, Munyai, Malignaggi? (or the next Hatton, calzaghe or Monte Barett, lol)

Oh so If Floyd beats a washed up DLH It will send him over the top and fans will be gullible enough to believe that.

If you debate with your master I suggest you be civil.

Who Is sleepwalking exactly? You demean me by saying STFU Scouse and you can't be specific.

floyd settled for bronze at 125 in 1996 after dropping close, disputed 11-10 decision in semis to bulgarian who did nothing as pro!!

on the whole the caliber of olympic stars has been slipping in terms of pro success..sometimes a chin issue as with wlad, sometimes a competitive fire issue as with audley!! most successful post-1996 olympian in pro ranks is probably jermain taylor---still pretty raw after 6 years as pro, but with significant potential for improvement!!

As much of a tw*t as I think PBF is, he has proved himself beyond doubt as a fighter, win or lose against ODLH. I never thought he didnt take the big fights. Its just that his style is often too ultra cautious and turns a lot of ppl off.
Agree that Hatton may well be in over his head against PBF. Your knocking of Hatton is OTT though. The guy has overachieved in his career if anything, who'd have thought in the Thaxton days that he would have gone on to win 3 or 4 world title fights? The only thing about Ricky is that he hasnt done himself any favours with his lifestyle outside the ring. That said, with his style of fighting his career was never going to be one of longevity. Hes got about 2 good fights left in him now max.

the greatests of all time all knew what it was like to lose and knew how to comeback, that's what made them great champions...adversity !
if PBF doesnt know what it is, he will never be "great"...
Oscar will beat him i think...it is good, because we will see what the boy is truely made of.

Mayweather? The saviour of boxing? A joke surely?

By and large the younger, more casual fans want to see bell to bell action. Toe to toe wars that end with one of the fighters brutally knocked out. There is little appreciation of skills or what we'd consider to be actual boxing. It's all about getting that gratifying hit of violence, without having to participate in it themselves. Just look at the reaction to men who box their way to victory in the states. Christ, they've even given Barrera and Winky the bird recently.

Mayweather, for all his ability and larger than life personality, can't provide the majority of fans what they crave. If anything, recent performances may be turning people off boxing. He just doesn't have the kind of style that will bring in more fans. Great fighter? Yes. Saviour of the sport? No.

SRL and Ali captured the public's imagination because of the great rivalries they had.. The rematches, the trilogies.. It wasn't just their personas and showmanship.. Anything they said they backed up in the ring.. They fought true grudge matches that lived up to the billing.. That's what made boxing so watchable and equally helped ensure the likes of Frazier, Hearns, Duran, Hagler, Foreman, Liston etc will live on along with them..
